Orange peels, algae, nettle and hemp were all part of @CELLFIL_EU 's webinar, “Biobased Materials in Industry” held on September 22nd.
Anusha Bhat offered a vivid overview of Bio-LUSH, explaining the project’s work on underutilised biomass and its potential for new materials.
If sustainable materials are the future, why do so many struggle to achieve widespread market adoption?
Last chance to register! The upcoming CELLFIL Policy Discussion on the EU´s Bioeconomy Strategy and Textile Regulations will examine how new policy directions can support innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness across the textile value chain.

Bio-based does not automatically mean circular.
A textile fiber can be made from renewable bio-resources and still end up as waste after a short use phase. True circularity depends on durability, reuse, repair, recycling, and responsible end-of-life management.

📢 We're excited to announce a new collaboration between @CELLFIL_EU and Bio-LUSH!
While Bio-LUSH is unlocking high-quality cellulose fibres from biomass sources such as hemp, nettle, forest residues, and seagrasses, CELLFIL is transforming renewable and circular feedstocks, including cotton textile waste and orange peel residues, into high-performance lyocell filament textiles. Together, we represent complementary stages of a new, circular textile value chain!

❗️The EU has introduced a new measure to reduce textile waste! From 19 July 2026, large companies can no longer destroy unsold clothes, clothing accessories and footwear. Under the new rules, businesses must prioritise options such as selling, donating, repairing or refurbishing products before disposal. Medium-sized companies will be required to comply from 2030👕
How do you think this new requirement will influence textile production, inventory management and circular business models across Europe?
This measure is part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), supporting more circular use of resources across the textile sector.

🍊“I can’t imagine how you can make a T-shirt out of orange peel?!”👕
This quote from a recent consumer study done by researchers from @AaltoUniversity reveals something important about the future of sustainable textiles.
While many consumers support environmentally friendly products, curiosity is often accompanied by uncertainty. How are bio-based textiles produced? Do they perform as well as conventional materials? Can they be trusted?
Research shows that consumer acceptance depends on much more than sustainability claims alone. Product quality, affordability, transparency, and trust all play a crucial role in turning interest into adoption.
Therefore, understanding these perceptions is essential for accelerating the transition to a more sustainable textile industry.
💬 If you heard about a T-shirt made from orange peel, would you be curious to try it?
