Puerto Ricans are among the most affected by #asthma in the world but there's little research. Our PRIMERO study is among the largest of its kind for a minority population, and we need your help. Please RT! #PuertoRicanStudy #2019SACNAS 1/3

For perspective on size, if a bacteria was the size of a jelly bean, then that would make one of the cells in your body charged to get rid of it, a macrophage, the size of a basketball. That would make you the size of Lake Michigan.

Last week, we announced that we're taking the first steps to heading back to the lunar surface by utilizing our international and commercial partnerships. They will build the next generation of landers, rovers and robots to explore the Moon before we eventually go to Mars.

How to increase visibility for #WomenInSTEM? Tell your story and show how you LOOK like in the lab. I took part to the #REALTIMECHEM week last week and my #chemselfie showing how #Womeninchemistry look like won the best selfie. @cenmag. We'll be the model for #nextgenscientist

Thanks to the Chicago @FoodDepository team for all you do and to the volunteers who are doing great work and let me crash today. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!
Thank you to @BarackObama and @ObamaFoundation for joining our volunteers today at the Food Depository. We believe no one should go hungry, especially this time of year, and that’s why we’re working to address the root causes of hunger in Chicago and Cook County.

The next 10 years will be the most important in the next 10,000 years in terms of shaping a future where humans can have a hope for an enduring place within the natural systems that keep us alive.

I knew her, trained with her, saved lives with her and tonight, tried to save her life. Tonight, I broke down in front of my coworkers when we lost her, and tonight I held hands with her mother in prayer. Tonight, we lost a beautiful, resilient, passionate doc. Keep singing, TO.

👧👦👧👦👧👦👧👦
More than 5 million 👧👦 under the age of 5 died in 2017.
This translates into 15K under-five deaths per day.
This is unacceptable. Every child deserves a long and healthy life.

I'm in Dr. Luis Mota-Bravo's lab where we investigate antibiotic resistance found in bacteria that we collect from the natural environment. For those of you who don't know, antibiotic resistance poses a serious threat to the public health.
We would think that with the lack of selective pressure in the natural environment, unlike clinical settings where we prescribe antibiotics and agriculture where we feed animals antibiotics, we wouldn't find antibiotic resistance genes in the bacteria collected, right?

1. Know who your audience is
2. Make the connection from your research to the bigger, societal impact. That is YOUR job. Cool, you’re ‘filling a gap in knowledge in your field’ but why should your neighbor or your barista care about your research? How could it affect them?

Great Science Writing Tips:
1. Avoid jargon UNLESS you explain it!! (keeping in mind your audience)
2. Be wary of fancy words you would NEVER use in every speech. Are they really helping get your point across? 🧐
3. Take your draft and cut clutter, cut clutter, CUT CLUTTER ❌

📣 Fancy words don't make you sound smart!! 📣
In fact, they can take AWAY from your message! This doesn't mean stripping your writing of beautiful words and leaving it curt/short/boring. The perfect balance is clear, meaningful, AND keeps the reader's attention.
