ALT This cartoon is in memory of Del Goddard 1946-2024: deputy Director of Education and councillor in Enfield, mentor, innovative educator and thought leader. This extract from Del’s 1992 book “The Search for Quality: planning improvement and managing change” sets out his belief in the role of society in influencing young people’s motivation to learn. “The capital of a nation depends on improving the quality of the education of each generation. The quality of education depends on the quality and motivation of the teaching force but also on the motivation of children. Both of these are directly influenced by the values and attitudes of society.” What does this mean for young people who find themselves in a society where the political party in power pushes NEMESIS values: Nepotisim over meritocracy; Egotism over collectivism, Meanness over generosity of spirit; Entitlement over equality, Selfishness over selflessness; Ignorance over education and Self service over public service.
