New research today from Brett Fisher and me, showing who left -- and entered -- the Bay over the last dozen years, and how affordability plays into those decisions. We find dramatic increases in homeownership for people leave the Bay. Who is priced out may not be who you think.
NEW🏠RESEARCH: Moving out of the San Francisco Bay Area can dramatically lower your housing costs and increase your likelihood of becoming a homeowner, according to a new CPL report. But movers also often encounter tradeoffs in their new communities, including lower quality schools, greater climate vulnerability, and lower average incomes. capolicylab.org/priced-out-o…

Great to see this important work published! Encouraging results on the impact of the rapid rehousing program in LA
📊New Research: A California Policy Lab study in the August issue of the Journal of Urban Economics shows that Rapid Re-Housing can reduce homelessness long after rental assistance ends. Following participants in Los Angeles County for four years, researchers found:
->30% reduction in future homelessness for single adults and youth
->25% reduction for families
->No evidence that short-term rental assistance reduced employment or earnings

As @CAPolicyLab’s Janey Rountree sees it, preventing homelessness requires 2 things: access to the right data and the political will to act. AI can provide the data part. buff.ly/XLXozOc

New reports reveal California's 'second look' resentencing reforms have significantly reshaped the state's criminal legal system. The reforms have led to low reoffending rates among those released, with less than 2% committing new serious or violent offenses within a year.
