ALT A photo of CAFOD Director Christine Allen with a quote. It reads: "We have gathered to pray for peace for all who call the holy land home, and to hear firsthand of the suffering endured by people living in occupied Palestinian territory. We welcome the Government’s action’s so far, especially banning trade with illegal Israeli settlements, and, for the first time, naming the Israeli occupation of Palestine unlawful. Sadly the extent of the suffering means we must act urgently and go further in support of our sisters and brothers in order to preserve prospects for a just and peaceful future. We call on the Government to increase international pressure to ensure accountability for all parties bringing about harm, and we continue our witness and prayers for peace.

Across the country people are exhausted, as they attempt to go about their lives under constant attack."

ALT A photo of Pope Leo XIV with an extract from his telegram message: "His Holiness sends heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved, together with the assurance of his spiritual closeness to those affected by this tragedy. Likewise offering prayers for the emergency personnel engaged in the ongoing rescue efforts, he invokes upon all divine assistance and protection."

ALT Christine Allen, Director and CEO of Catholic aid agency CAFOD said: “Andy Burnham’s Catholic upbringing will undoubtedly continue to play an important part in informing his leadership and decision-making. He has talked about prioritising fairness and justice, and of having the courage to ‘fix big things’. All of that will be necessary as the UK prepares to take on the leadership of the G20 later this year. “The church’s social teaching offers a priceless framework that speaks into every aspect of life and leadership. It will be a valuable guide in the biggest challenges Mr Burnham will need to address, such as lifting people out of poverty, tackling the climate crisis and reforming the broken and harmful financial systems in our world today.
