Reality check for athletes and their families: ⚾️
Choosing a college largely to "stay close to home" means you don't understand how scholarship baseball actually works.
The harsh reality of the daily grind:
1️⃣ 6 Days a Week: You are locked into baseball activities almost year-round. Coaches intentionally schedule weekend practices at awkward times to keep guys on campus, focused, and out of trouble.
2️⃣ The Social Shift: Players grow up fast. They quickly want to stay on campus to build chemistry with teammates and dive into their new life.
3️⃣ The Roster Fight: You're competing for a job. Leaving campus for 24–48 hours puts you behind. You won't get your work in at home, and someone else is taking your reps.
Parents: What's the ideal radius you're looking at for schools? 1-3 hours, or completely open to anywhere?
Any families out there having issues getting around the idea of being close to home? Drop your thoughts below 👇

Some people are worried about junior college being less than ideal from an academic perspective vs. a four year school but here is the reality:
Your two years at good number of junior colleges will have you taking 100 and 200 level classes in a variety of topics......guess what? You will likely be taking those same types of classes at the four year school in your first two years.
The content in those 100 and 200 level classes are THE SAME at the junior college and four year schools.
Your two years at a good number of junior colleges will have a mixed bag of teachers with masters and doctorate degrees.....guess what? You will likely run into the same mix of teachers in your first two years at a decent number of four year schools.
If you go to school in an area with a junior college close to a four year school it is very possible that teacher is teaching at BOTH schools.
Oh and one more thing......the cost per credit hour at a junior college is almost always a fraction of the cost you pay at a four year school.
One very last piece.....in my experience working with over 2500 families in the last 10 years, it is almost ALWAYS an issue for the parents and rarely an issue for the student.
Something to think about!

Talk about a hard worker! @landondip2 has shaved his 60 down and will continue to do so. That paired with an ev nearing 100mph consistently makes for a dangerous corner bat!

One more weekend to go down in Marietta at the CAA camp! Here are my numbers the last few weekends and stats through games this fall. Improved my 60 to a 7.5 and am continuing to lower that number💪@The_CAAdvantage @CAALayne

Ricky Gabuat (‘29 WA) lines this one hard into the pull side gap for a double. Does a nice job catching it out front; flexes the power a bit. #HSAS @PGNorthwest

Congratulations to 2027 SS, Derek Hernandez, on his commitment to Youngstown State University! The Penguins landed themselves a complete player in Derek. With his raw strength, power, speed and hustle, Derek makes for a great get in the YSU recruiting class! The best attribute overall is his work ethic, Derek is in the gym almost everyday, doing recovery almost everyday, taking grounders and bp almost every day. He has earned everything through hard work. The Bishop Hartley product is coming off an excellent junior season and battled a broken hamate bone over the summer and since coming back hasn't missed a beat! Could not be more excited for Derek and the whole Hernandez family! Congrats! @DerekHern23 @YSUBaseball
Congratulations once again to @tycemav & family!

Congratulations to 2027 LHH 3B/RHP, Tyce Mavin, on his commitment to Edmonds College! Tyce is a great get for the Tritons as they look to keep stacking winning seasons in the NWAC! Tyce is a RHP that can get up to 85 on the mound with 2500rpm, he pairs that with stellar defensive play at third and a 97ev! Super pumped for Tyce and the whole Mavin family! @tycemav @EdmondsBaseball

Most high school athletes dream of playing for a championship college program. 🏆
There’s nothing wrong with that, but here’s a question to consider 👇
What if joining a struggling program provides the BETTER opportunity?
An established program often already has experienced players at every position, talented backups, and limited opportunities for underclassmen to compete. Your athlete might have to wait two or three years before earning a starting role is realistic. 😕
A rebuilding program, on the other hand, might provide an opportunity to compete earlier and the satisfaction of being a big part of MAKING a program successful.
Of course, not every struggling program presents a good opportunity. There’s a difference between a program that’s building with a clear plan and a program that’s struggling because of poor leadership, inadequate resources, or a dysfunctional culture.
The main point is this…
Don’t automatically eliminate a school because of its win-loss record, and don’t assume that joining a winning program automatically means your athlete will have a better experience.
The end goal isn’t simply to be part of a successful program. It’s finding an opportunity where your athlete can contribute, develop, and have a meaningful college experience. 👍

STOP putting so much pressure on that first email. 🔴
The goal is much simpler than you think.
👉 Get on the coach's radar.
Give them enough info to make an initial evaluation. Just the basics. 👌
✔️Name, graduation year, position/event, high school, and location.
✔️ Why your athlete is targeting the school and/or program.
✔️ A few of their strongest metrics and statistics.
✔️ Academic information, including GPA and academic interest areas.
✔️ A link to a recruiting profile and/or videos
❓Then ASK a question to put the ball back in the coach’s court to respond.
Just get the conversation going.
If your athlete wants to play in college but you’re unsure how to introduce them to coaches or what should happen after that first email...that's where we can help. Reach out to get started with a free consultation. 💬

If you aren't a big school kind of player but still want that big school experience you could potentially find it by looking for the following:
1) Smaller school located in close proximity of a big school
2) Smaller school located in a heavily populated area
3) Smaller school with a robust athletic department and quality facilities
4) Smaller school with a large number of students who stay on campus on the weekends
A perfect example of this would be Grand Rapids, Michigan. Smaller schools located a stones throw from a 22k+ student state school that has exceptional athletics and averages higher football attendance than some D1 programs.
Don't get bogged down and shut out quality opportunities because you missed the bigger picture!

If you are feeling bad you are not getting the traction you were hoping for with schools and seeing commitment posts all over, thus leading to feelings of being down in the dumps.....please know this.....
50% of kids are transferring and another reasonably large number of kids don't end up at the school they have "committed" to in the first place.
Try to put blinders on as best you can. Don't scour major baseball sites to see who is "committed", almost nothing good can come from it! Your process is exactly that......YOUR PROCESS!
