SUVs now make up more than half of all new car sales in the UK. They're heavier, wider, taller and less fuel-efficient than the cars they replaced. And ugly - did I mention ugly? They make roads measurably more dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians, and especially children, whose height places them in SUV blind spots at the moment it matters most. They make car parks tighter. Urban streets narrower. Emissions targets harder to reach. The market has spoken. And what it's saying is: give me a car bigger than I need, costlier to run, and worse for everyone around me. We call that consumer choice. We don't call it policy failure. But it's actually both.
