Two weeks in, his new hires are touching off and changing tools. Four weeks in, they're running full setups. Jason Davis tells Ethan Crane why young machinists close the gap fast, if you keep giving them the next step. #Machinist #Workforce

Is manual machining dead? Ethan Crane doesn't think so. On a manual lathe you learn X and Z, you see the cut, you feel what the insert is doing. Skip that and we lose a great on-ramp for the next generation. #ManualMachining #Machinist

so the productized lanes @OSHBuilt wrote about last week have a 28-year history. i did a bit of digging this week. here's what each one said NO to: > protomold, 1999: anything that wasn’t a two-part aluminum mold > quickparts, 2000: no quote without a file, and they patented that > osh park, 2009: one purple stackup, $5 a square inch > rapid sheet metal, 2013: no prints, 3d files only (sold for $120m) > sendcutsend, 2018: no prints, 44 by 30 inches max > osh cut, 2018: same price for everyone, no negotiation > fabworks, 2023: metals only > digital metal, 2025: no tooling, castings from a printed tree > finalrev, 2025: step files only, same day > twentyfour26, 2026: one part size, 6061 > phoenix heat treating, 2026: in testing there are more for sure, but many didn’t survive (plethora, tempo, fast radius, shapeways), mostly because they said YES to everything. but yeah, this is a long one. give it a read over the weekend and let me know who i forgot or got wrong.

Timmy didn't get into the manufacturing internship program his sophomore year. So he did a 4-day summer tour of local plants, loved it, and applied again. This summer he interned at Jessup Manufacturing through the Manufacturing Pathways Consortium. #NextGenManufacturing

Some parts go in a piston that moves up and down. Some go on a loud, beautiful custom motorcycle. Either way, every product at IMTS started with a machinist. Satya Kraus, Carey Hart, and Taylor Schultz on building around what you love. #Machinist #MadeInAmerica

The best booth at IMTS 2026 felt like an experience, not a sales pitch. Carey Hart, Taylor Schultz, and Satya Kraus explain how Kennametal's custom Indian motorcycle build started with a few phone calls. #IMTS2026 #Manufacturing

the small machine shop is stuck under $3 million. it’s stuck because of who it works for and on what terms.

Most shop owners think their machines run 70-80% of the time. Mark Christopher of DN Solutions says they'd be doing well to hit half that, and they're only counting one shift. #Manufacturing #OEE

Mark Christopher of DN Solutions says if you're starting a shop on a tight budget, you probably shouldn't buy his machines. But the apps and service guys are what sell the second machine, not the first. #Manufacturing #CNC

Don't automate before you understand the process. Titan Gilroy: program for efficiency, use your whole work envelope, then automate. Run 60 parts on a pallet, not one or two. #CNC #Automation

i think the job data in a shop is worth more now than a single machine on the floor. ai labs are emailing shops asking for it, and xometry already prices its jobs off it. but no bank will lend you a dollar against it, so you have to build it yourself. own it. the processes, the data collection, the insights, the back and front office, at the shop level. that's table stakes now if you plan to survive (thrive?) the next 10 years. exciting times. truly.

Titan Gilroy says it's not a skills gap, it's an awareness gap. Young people have no idea they could be running CNC machines and robots, making rocket, car, and medical parts instead of working fast food. #Manufacturing #WorkforceDevelopment
