We’ve just observed two Dark Green Fritillaries on the Coldean Lane Wildflower Meadow. That takes our species count up to 24, about 65% of the total number of butterflies found in the Living Coast Biosphere Reserve. Not bad for a former lawn which is only the width of two houses.

I'm immensely proud of what our committee has achieved recently, its a real team effort.
In winter 22-23, we managed Purging Buckthorn on the Liz Williams Butterfly Haven in three ways:
1) Cut it down to the ground.
2) Cut off the canopy leaving the stem/trunk of the bush.
3) Leave the entire bush intact.
The Brimstone caterpillars preferred 3 - the intact canopy.
It’s true!!!!
Dear Brighton and Hove residents, we can do this without glyphosate, work work family, friends and neighbours to your paths. You know it makes sense! @SteveGeliot @PKBook22 @PAN_UK @ButterflyDan @LatestTVBtn @LivingCoastUK @CPRESussex @btnhovewildlife @CoLeeves @Kate_Bradbury
Special Branch tree nursery informed me that my good friend Lucy Williams had 50 hawthorn to donate to the Liz Williams (Lucy’s mother) Butterfly Haven.
These were delivered and I planted them in the haven during my lunch break today.
Thank you Lucy!
Fabulous to be involved with such a passionate team.
Workday #2 in the Haven was hedgerow planting.
150 new Blackthorn & 150 new Purging Buckthorn planted, & work to contain some areas of brambles.
Huge thanks to Dan, Roy, Libby & Gary for their hard work, Tony for organising us, @BCSussex for support & the weather for being dry.
