The New York’s post sensationalized coverage of the botched execution of Krista Pike is a grotesque display of tabloid cruelty, masquerading as journalism. Turning a profound human tragedy and a state sanctioned mechanical failure into a goal spectacle for ratings is beneath contempt. Pike entered this world a victim, enduring severe childhood trauma, and carrying the deep psychological scars of an 18 year-old whose life was defined by abuse long before he ever committed a crime. To mock her agony and the horrific reality of a state failing to execute her properly while leaving her suffering in a medical crisis exposes, a total bankruptcy of empathy and ethics. True justice is not found in a torture chamber, nor is it served by media outlets that strip away human dignity for a cheap headline. The POST should be ashamed of prioritizing sensationalism over basic human decency. nypost.com/2026/10/02/us-new…

Hallelujah! When I worked at Rikers Island, the heat was so brutal that I offered to have people‘s jeans cut into shorts. Nobody took me up on it b/c the pants were needed for the colder months, and they only had one pair. It was horrible! nytimes.com/2026/09/22/us/te…

Our Prisons, Ourselves: How Norway Treats Its Most Reviled Citizen solitarywatch.org/2026/08/02… There is no reason for our prisons to be hell on earth. Loss of freedom should be the punishment —not abuse, terror, violence & degradation. Norway figured it out. Why can’t we?

One of Filter’s coverage pillars has always been tobacco harm reduction. We’ve examined the world’s largest source of drug-related deaths, countered pervasive misinformation and advocated to embed THR in wider public health and human rights causes: filtermag.org/the-war-on-nic…

In my work as a therapist & former director of a suicide prevention hotline, I can say that people contemplating ending their lives, or actually making an attempt, are in agony. For the @nypost to blow up this man’s distress for entertainment is sickening. nypost.com/2026/08/03/us-new…

We’ve all come to know that the death penalty does nothing to deter people from killing other people. Nor does solitary confinement teach those who suffer its effects, to be, nonviolent. What solitary confinement does do to people is to slowly drain their minds and soul of all that makes them human. I know, as I spent over 22 years in solitary confinement and from 2006 until 2012 or 2013. I was diagnosed as being semi-catatonic. I have no memory of those years. I could no longer endure the agonizing, crushing pain of being completely alone in an empty steel and concrete tomb. No one to talk to, to touch, to be touched, no one to love nor to be loved. For over two decades. My mind could no longer endure the emptiness, the aloneness the nothingness. My mind finally broke free from this reality we were all born to, and I became empty, nothing, in order to endure the void of emptiness and nothingness. Solitary confinement needs to be abolished as well as criminalized because literally, it is torture! It drives people insane and drives many to suicide in order to escape their agonized suffering. AND, solitary confinement in no way shape or form deters it sufferers from violence. In fact it can often cause acts of violence from its sufferers. They become mentally unstable, paranoid and their psychosis, which is caused by long term isolation developes into schizophrenia. There’s absolutely nothing positive about solitary confinement.

Right on, Bernie!
Let me be very clear: opposing the genocide in Gaza is not antisemitism.

*Everyone* who lives and works in NYC jails on Rikers knows the source of most of the contraband is correction officers. This is just another way to distract from this fact.
This public defender was literally just bringing legal docs to his client at Rikers Island. COs then arrested him to the cheers of other COs & claimed 130 pages of legal docs(!) tested positive for THC. The COs union then smeared him & used the arrest to push for more repression.

NEW: In just the past week, NYC jails Commissioner Stanley Richards approved the early release of four people from Rikers Island under Article 6-A of state law. He's freed 14 in total. Advocates have long pushed jail commissioners to use it more. thecityreporter.nyc/2026/06/…

There’s a great commercial where a woman listens to a “Manifest Money in 24 Hours” meditation at her kitchen table. She says, “Money flows to me easily and effortlessly.” A second later, her phone pings. Her paycheck was deposited early. Perfect joke. But also a pretty good investing lesson. You can ask the universe for money all you want, but you still have to know what to do with it when it shows up. This week’s newsletter is about Think and Grow Rich, The Secret, getting lucky, doing the work, owning assets, and why your network may matter more than your “wealthy aura.” Read it here (link in comments):
