Brazil: Flávio Bolsonaro asked President Lula in their first runoff debate why 73% of prisoners voted for him. Lula replied that he wants “100% to vote, even your father,” referring to jailed former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Francis Fukuyama on finding an apartment in Santa Monica in the early 1980s: "On arriving, I saw an offer on the bulletin board at Rand for a room in a shared apartment posted by one of the secretaries. She was a rather attractive brunette somewhere in her mid-forties with a deep tan and freckles, who had a rent-controlled house close by in downtown Santa MonicaI. I showed up with my suitcase and found the front door open with no one apparently at home. I walked inside and wandered around; there were stairs leading up to a roof patio, where I found, amidst a jungle of marijuana plants, the secretary lying out on a chaise longue, completely naked. She told me to take the bedroom between her daughter’s and that of her own seventeen-year-old boyfriend. He was the same age as her daughter, and had his own room in case they weren’t getting along that day. When I met him in the evening, he turned out to be a bare-chested, suntanned surfer of California legend." google.com/books/edition/In_…

Some months ago, we drove past Noor ("light"), one of the largest solar energy projects in the world. It’s located 20km northeast of Ouarzazate, Morocco’s Hollywood where all your favourite sword-and-sandal films were made. But this is of a different genre – probably sci–fi, though I’ve seen the radiating light at the top of the CSP tower described as the Eye of Sauron, which I’m told is from some fantasy film. The rays of light in the air are a preposterous polyphotia.

This man is a disgrace to the profession, he should not be able to call himself a historian after revealing this degree of ignorance about US imperialism in Latin America.

Historian Tim Snyder compares what Trump is doing in Latin America to Soviet tactics in Eastern Europe after WWII: rig elections, apply threats, install the leadership you want. His description of Trump’s approach: “smash and grab.”

Whoever wins the election 🇧🇷 will not really rule. Congress is a hungry & reactionary pigsty; Lula is old and has no successor. If Lula can’t lead, Flávio doesn’t want to. His clan’s imbrication with organized crime and subservience to the US 🇺🇸 tells you all you need to know.

It is not being fought on in these terms (or any terms), but as discussed on @BungaCast yesterday, big questions of external and internal sovereignty at stake

While I'm now convinced this is a historically important election, I think @BrazilBrian's description of it as 'apathetic polarization' sums it up.

in 1987, west german ice hockey team ecd iserlohn was going through financial problems ($3.5 million in debt). desperate for sponsorships, they struck a $900,000 deal with libyan dictator colonel gaddafi to advertise his ideological manifesto “the green book” on their jerseys.

Almost hilarious levels of dysenthusiasm in Brazil's election. Both leading presidential candidates' last campaign videos telling voters "you don't have to buy into me, you don't even need to like me". Go ahead, disinvest entirely – just don't vote for the other guy, ok?

🚨 At the U20 Mayors Summit, Mamdani Says the Left Has Ceded “Quality of Life,” “Efficiency,” and “Fraud and Waste” to the Right This was one of the more interesting arguments Zohran Mamdani made today at the U20 Mayors Summit, and a reminder that he can be genuinely sharp when he drops the “central casting” routine. “In New York City, there are certain words that have taken on ideological associations.” “Quality of life has come to be seen as somehow a right-wing concern. Efficiency… has been taken on as a right-wing concern, rooting out fraud and waste, a right-wing concern.” Mamdani’s argument is that refusing to engage those issues actually helps the Right. “If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’” The harder question is how much of the broader Left is actually prepared to follow the advice.

Houthi rebels using Claude to guide rockets is a whole new level of cyberpunk dystopia
Anthropic’s new threat report is absolutely insane. They claim: -Alibaba extracted 151M+ Claude exchanges to help train Qwen -Kimi secretly routed some users to Claude without them knowing -DeepSeek apparently did the same -A weapons group used multiple Claude instances as an engineering team, test-fired a guided rocket, FAILED, then went back to Claude to figure out what went wrong What the fuck did I just read 😭
