The “car” in question is seemingly a G-Wiz and actually isn’t a car - it’s a European "heavy quadricycle" category instead of the "car" category. The UK Department for Transport found "serious safety concerns" after crashing a now-discontinued G-Wiz at 56 km/h (35 mph) into a deformable barrier This model was likely equipped with eight 6-volt, 200Ah lead-acid batteries connected in series to form a 48V system. These batteries were positioned beneath the front seats. It’s possible it was retrofitted with lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) or even Tesla battery but it should not simply be assumed that this was a Li-Ion battery I don’t particularly want to defend what is a terrible “car”, but I do feel a need to correct blatantly poor @Telegraph journalism and alarmist headlines “EV fires up 77% in two years” See @colinwalker79 analysis pointing out that the number of EVs on our roads has gone up 105% in those 2 years. Which means the frequency of EV fires has actually gone down! And as I’ve written before, the probability of a fire in an EV is 60x less likely than in a conventional vehicle. - Electric Vehicles (EVs): Approximately 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles, equating to a 0.025% annual fire rate. - Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Vehicles: Approximately 1,530 fires per 100,000 vehicles, or a 1.53% annual fire rate. Now an EV fire is harder to put out, but perhaps worth pointing to Chinese regulations requiring EV fires to approach zero probability with noteworthy improvements to control systems - rhetoric around imposing the same requirements on all EVs sold in U.K. would make a more relevant story although recognise the maths might be a bit hard for this author!
