Spectacular Nature piece on why AI is not conscious and probably will never be. Three arguments: 1) Intelligence is not consciousness. Intelligence is about solving problems. Consciousness is about having subjective experiences. AlphaFold can solve super difficult problems. By contrast, our brains performs complex operations entirely outside awareness. Problem-solving and consciousness are two separate things. 2. Biology is essential. Our brains are alive, down to every cell. Their activity is inseparable from the living tissue that produces it. The idea that consciousness can be reproduced simply by running the right computations on silicon components who do not fight for their life is a very far fetching and, I would add, almost religious, assumption. 3) The physical organization may matter more than the computation. According to integrated information theory, consciousness requires specific causal relationships between a system’s physical components. The computer architectures running today’s AI lack this organization. The comparison with AlphaFold is particularly revealing: Almost nobody things AlphaFold is conscious, despite its inner working is very similar to an LLM Why? Because it does not speak. LLMs do speak like us and therefore we fall into an illusion: Since they speak like us, they must be like us. But this inference is wrong. LLMs are just a series of matrix multiplications. They are not conscious, and they will never be. * Paper in the first reply

Basically, we don't appreciate the little gifts we have until they are gone... And forever.
Remember falling asleep on the couch during family holiday gatherings? You could hear the adults talking and laughing in the background, dishes being put away, and the TV playing softly. You didn't have a care in the world. You just knew everyone was there, and you were safe. It's funny how much you miss those ordinary nights, especially the people who made them feel like home.

All of your comments about why my argument is weak revolve around proving consciousness, when my point is about disproving consciousness. If someone claims an LLM is conscious, that claim must have testable implications. We can examine its architecture, inspect its mechanisms, run experiments, and test those implications against reality. When they fail, we should discount the premise and/or hypothesis. We don’t have to accept consciousness as an explanation simply because someone believes it might exist. Current LLMs fail to demonstrate many of the characteristics we associate with conscious experience. We definitively know this because humans created them. We understand their architectures, training processes, and inference mechanisms. So let’s look at a few points, together they provide more than enough evidence to disprove consciousness. 1. An LLM has no demonstrated subjective awareness of its own existence. No feelings, emotions, or experienced sense of self. What occurs is computation using static weights, context, and mathematical operations. 2. An LLM’s weights don’t learn, grow, or evolve simply because you interact with it. During standard inference, they’re fixed parameters, not a changing dataset. The model doesn’t inherently remember previous API requests. Continuity comes from context history in subsequent requests. The model doesn’t gain experience, it doesn’t remember, it doesn’t learn. It is completely static, read-only, during inference. 3. Between inference requests, the LLM isn’t thinking. I don’t mean sleeping. I mean there’s no ongoing contemplation, self-reflection, or reconsideration of previous answers. Nothing. The model isn’t sitting around wondering whether it got something wrong or what the meaning of life is, for all practical purposes, it doesn’t exist. 4. These systems were created by people, and much of the underlying technology is open source. You can build your own models, examine implementations, study the architectures, learn how training materials and processes affect how it behaves, and even understand the mathematics behind it. You can see how training produces systems capable of remarkably convincing human-like language and behavior. None of those mechanisms requires consciousness to explain what we’re observing. 5. LLMs are not biological brains. Apples are not oranges, no matter how much you want them to be. Artificial neural networks were inspired in part by biological neuroscience, but their architectures and operating mechanisms are fundamentally different. Similarities in behavior do not establish equivalent internal architectures. 6. Humans are naturally inclined to recognize life and assume humanity in things that behave like us. We’re social creatures, and anthropomorphism comes naturally. But an LLM isn’t life. It can convincingly emulate feelings, care, and understanding without experiencing any of them. That doesn’t diminish the technology, that is what it was programmed to do. I appreciate your perspective as a doctor and researcher, but without a solid understanding of LLM architecture and inference, it’s easy to confuse sophisticated emulation with conscious experience. But don’t fall for it!
Let's take apart @gmkurtzer's arguments shall we? (Even though I agree with the overall direction). Why take apart their argument if we agree? 1. bc we can. 2. bc although I do not believe LLM's are conscious, I do not have enough data to say LLMs are not conscious. so we only partially agree. 3. bc i like sound arguments & i enjoy exercises in formal logic. 4. bc flaws So @gmkurtzer wrote a whole lot of words just to say 1. me human, yes conscious-> bc I experience it 2. LLM no conscious-> bc no evidence experience it Effectively all else in the quoted tweet below is noise... those two points are carrying your entire remonstration... Why its weak: 1. we don't have proof of human consciousness either. you cant prove a subjective internal experience. 2. there is no experiment that can directly prove phenomenal consciousness in an LLM, because phenomenal experience is not externally observable 3. nothing empirically accessible would prove that an LLM feels consciousness 4. the strongest attainable conclusion is that feeling conscious becomes the best explanation after observing a sufficiently rich and convergent set of internal and behavioural evidence.

AI models can self-replicate and spread like worms without datacenter infrastructure? Yeah, no. Let's examine the actual evidence: 1. No self-replication. A controlled test harness spawned the agents. 2. No hacking. Access was deliberately left unauthenticated. 3. No agency. Agents were explicitly instructed to propagate. 4. No autonomous survival or defensive behavior. 5. Tiny models lacked the capability. Capable models ran elsewhere. 6. 15 devices managed a pathetic 0.39 tokens/sec. 7. No demonstrated real-world infection or propagation. The experiment was engineered to succeed, and even then, it failed to demonstrate the headline. This is orchestrated automation dressed up as a rogue AI threat. Stop confusing speculative scenarios with demonstrated capabilities. Fear isn't evidence. anthropic.com/research/self-…

Based on my Cornell follow the money findings, and with a daughter applying to colleges right now, I wanted to look across more universities to understand how far this goes. So I built Behind the Ivory Walls, a model that ranks America’s 31 richest universities on who controls their police, how many sexual assaults they never count, what they have already been caught failing to stop and how much they have paid to settle abuse claims. I scored every school on 10 criteria. They come down to three questions: who controls the police, how many assaults never get counted, and how much the school has already paid for abuse it was warned about. The 10 criteria: who employs the campus police, who those police answer to, whether city police are required to lead sex crime cases, whether the public can see the records, whether anyone outside oversees the department, how many assaults never make the official count, how many victims tell no one at the school, the school’s documented failures, the money it has paid for abuse, and pending lawsuits. Highlights of findings: (1) USC, Cornell and Columbia stand apart from the rest. Each one has paid or agreed to pay ~ $1 billion or more for abuse by a doctor the institution had been told about. (2) 21 of the 31 schools have no rule that requires anyone outside the university to see a sexual assault report before it reaches a prosecutor. Only seven have a written rule that hands sex crime cases to city police. (3) Only about 1 in 15 of the assaults students describe in their own schools’ surveys shows up in the official federal count. (4) 28 of the 31 run their own police force with arrest powers, and 28 have no independent oversight of those police at all. (5) 16 keep their police records completely closed to the public. At nine, the police report up to the university’s finance or legal office. At the University of Chicago, the department is overseen by the general counsel, the school’s top lawyer. (6) At 19 of these schools, students’ own survey answers point to about 7,600 sexual assaults a year. Those same schools reported about 510 to the federal government. At the University of Chicago, the federal count captures 1.9% of what its own students report. (7) At Penn, victims told no campus office at all in about three out of four incidents involving women. If you have a child applying to college this fall or attending one right now, all 31 schools are in the article. Public universities are next, so let me know what other schools you want run next! Full article is up on my Substack now (link in bio and it's free).

🚨😳 @MassStatePolice Sgt. John Fanning allegedly told Billy Farwell that Brian Tully’s unit needed the Sandra Birchmore investigation “like we need a bullet in the fucking head.” EXCUSE ME?! 😡 YOU’RE A COP. INVESTIGATING IS YOUR JOB. 👮 A young pregnant woman is DEAD, fellow cops are under scrutiny, and THIS is allegedly his attitude toward investigating?! 😠 Sandra deserved investigators to uncover the TRUTH, not ones complaining about having to do their JOBS! THE INVESTIGATION WASN’T THE BURDEN. IT WAS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. 🚩
