a man once told me he couldn't be comfortable reading Jane Austen because he kept thinking about what elegantly cutting way she'd sum him up, & honestly that's the correct amount of Fear her powers should induce.
even isolated, depressed, verging on stalker-y peter parker would NEVER have treated her like robert pattinson's charlie.
I don't have an iron in the Carrie fire, but I will say in middle school, as a christian homeschooler, returning from 2 years overseas, I was wildly confused by Lizzie McGuire because she was dressed the same as the supposed Cool Girls (TM)

"certified freak?" no, i remain uncertified because the freak certification board has undergone regulatory capture and now artificially limits supply to drive up freak wages
there's a vape shop attached to a comics store nearby *covered* in trash graffitti like "Rick & Morty, but they're high" & "a mostly-orange super saiyan, maybe." It makes me want to gouge out my eyeballs & it's still got more artistic merit than an AI flyer with a tasteful serif.
c'mon, no one should be surprised the man with a soulpatch and "fun shirts" as an identity has some interesting ideas about chemical substances to tell you
Palmer Luckey reveals the startup he'd build today: oxytocin doping to end divorce
"I would try to end the tragedy of divorce with oxytocin doping for marriage counseling."
"We understand mammal pair bonding pretty well. There's a lot of people who want to stay together. Most of the people who don't want to stay together should stay together, especially for their kids."
"And we can, if people think SSRIs are fine, which they're not, but if they were, then oxytocin doping to stay together is definitely fine."
"It's the mammal pair bonding chemical. There's things you can do to increase the uptake, and it's very well understood. Also, totally unregulated, which is great. Unregulated spaces are a lot easier to do. You can go buy a kilogram of oxytocin on Sigma Aldrich Chemical Supply right now, and if you do that, maybe you won't die alone."
"It's pure biology. It's used for women who don't bond with their kids, and now for women who don't bond with their husbands. It's also used for kids with various neurological issues, some kids with autism who struggle with pair bonding."
"The cool thing is it's a self-reinforcing loop. We understand that very well. Unlike most drugs, it doesn't form a chemical dependency. It actually unburdens you from a chemical dependency."

typically great piece but this section in particular stopped me in my tracks
Spent a few weeks earlier this year roaming a Hollywood almost entirely reoriented around the production of “microdramas,” which are kind of like soap operas except they’re short and completely demented and optimized for your phone. Started as one kind of sad story and ended as another, differently sad kind of story. You can read it now in @NYTmag nytimes.com/2026/10/06/magaz…
sometimes you have to look at your life & go "okay, these might not be original experiences, but my life may have innovated a unique layering system" & just accept it.

i dont think enough people grasp how insane it is for four women to operate a decades long manga group where with each project they operated like a mini animation production team with character sheets and references and had consistent art styles between them to pull it all off

if you live with someone with ADHD and they say "i'm putting this in a safe spot," take it out of their hands. that item is about to leave this dimension.
ok, my Top Of My Head at 1:30am list! My rubric was "I've referenced a quote or scene from it, multiple times with others, because it shifted how I thought about Life."
a 6 yr old demonstrating edmund burke's distinction between the sublime (awe-inspiring, extreme, elephantine) and the beautiful (small, tender, inspires compassion.)
My niece asked me to guess her favorite animal and I have never been more confident in my life. She's six. She has a stuffed elephant she carries by the trunk, elephant pajamas, an elephant on her backpack. I said elephant. She said no. I said elephant again, slower, like she'd misheard. She said "no, ELEPHANTS are my job." Apparently in her head she's a person who takes care of elephants, which is different from liking them, and her actual favorite animal is a moth because they're "soft and they don't know where they're going." I asked my sister about this later and she said it's been going on since August and nobody can get a straight answer about the moth thing either.
(if you like this, definitely read or re-read Burke's whole treatise, which has such amazing section titles as "Proportion not the cause of Beauty in Vegetables" & his point that weakness can enhance beauty is maddening & yet quite revolutionary ✌️) gutenberg.org/files/15043/15…

some may say this is a perfect relationship. but actually it is a nightmare. both parties are fundamentally out of touch with reality, doomed to exist in parallel delusion that forecloses the possibility of true intimacy
