BSP was proud to participate in the Siemer Institute Summit, where Angel Ramos (Community Advancement Manager) presented on how BSP’s holistic approach combines workforce development with financial capability, digital access, family support, and trusted community partnerships. His presentation emphasized that training is only the beginning and requires continued, customized support that helps workers advance in their careers and build lasting economic stability for their families. Angel also had the special opportunity to meet the Siemer Institute’s founders and learn more about their vision for strengthening families and communities. We are grateful for the opportunity to exchange ideas, build relationships, and elevate the experiences of property service workers on a national stage. #SiemerInstitute #WorkforceDevelopment #FamilyStability

📚 Learning, connecting, and growing together! On September 22, our Southern California (LA–OC–SD) instructor team gathered at our San Diego office for a special training with Stand Out co-author Rob Jenkins. Rob led a mock Level 1 class, modeling how to integrate the Classroom Presentation Tool, textbooks, and lesson planners to encourage student participation, practice, and progress. His key message: focus on learning over perfection, gently stretch learners, and build their confidence to take risks. We were also thrilled to have Rob meet some of our English Conversation learners and hear their experiences with Stand Out! 🗣️📖

We’re proud to celebrate an incredible milestone made possible through the partnership between Building Skills Partnership, DMS and the County of San Diego. BSP trained 75 DMS Janitors in just six weeks, successfully completing their certification through the Green Janitors Education Program! The training included a combination of 2 in-person classes and 4 virtual classes, providing workers with valuable knowledge and skills to support healthier and more sustainable workplaces. This is just the beginning! More classes are on the way as we work toward an important goal: training all janitors working at County of San Diego government sites. BSP is excited to continue this partnership with DMS and the County of San Diego, creating even more training and professional development opportunities for workers. Congratulations to all 75 certified Green Janitors! Your hard work and commitment are worth celebrating!

BSP joined the @immigrantsarela Coalition to listen, learn, and advocate for the Guaranteed Basic Income program being proposed to the LA County Board of Supervisors. This program would provide a lifeline to seniors in LA county who cannot access retirement programs. Immigrant elders spent 20,30, even 40 years of their lives contributing to the county and many are still working past the retirement age. With the rising costs of living and defunding of public assistance programs, we need a solution to ensure those who have spent their lives building this county can retire with dignity. Thank you to the IRLA coalition for advocating for this important program and for the opportunity to join you in the advocacy.

Meet Angel Ismael Fernandez Donez! Angel is a sophomore at UC Davis studying Mechanical Engineering and is a 2025 and 2026 scholarship recipient. Through the Carnegie Scholarship and Mike Garcia Scholarship, Angel has received a total of $6,000 to support his college journey. Last year, Angel also participated in our Avanzando Through College program, where he gained valuable career preparation skills. He shared: “I think my favorite workshop was the career exploration workshop because we were able to get examples of writing a resume, writing a cover letter, and preparing for interviews if we applied for jobs. A big reason for this being my favorite is that I was applying to jobs around the time of that workshop, and I found the information to be very helpful. I took the information, and when I applied it to my job application process, I ended up landing one on-campus job and one summer internship at a biotech company!” This year, Angel shared how his scholarship is helping ease the financial burden of college: “This year, the scholarship I received is going to go to two things: paying off the unsubsidized loans that I withdrew so that I can pay off the interest that began to accrue, and a little more, as well as helping me pay for rent in the apartment that I moved into for this year! This has made my year a lot less stressful by relieving a financial burden, allowing me to focus purely on my studies!” We are so proud of Angel’s continued growth and accomplishments and are excited to continue supporting him throughout his college journey!

We had 12 students in attendance, and a few additional students reached out to me directly to let me know that they were unable to attend today but are planning to join us for the next class. "I wanted to make the first day a welcoming and positive experience for everyone, so I brought notebooks for all the students. We had a fun activity where students decorated their notebooks with stickers featuring motivational phrases. I also brought donuts for everyone to share, which helped create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The overall environment was excellent. The students were happy and excited to be back in class, and I’m very happy and grateful to have the opportunity to share this new learning journey with them."
