At 7 o’clock yesterday morning, wholesale electricity in New York cost about $48 a megawatt-hour. Twenty minutes later it cost $580. It wasn’t one city or one bottleneck. Buffalo, the North Country, New York City and Long Island all spiked together, within a few dollars of each other, which means the whole state was short at once. By 7:55 prices were back near $50. Demand wasn’t unusual. Load was around 15.5 GW, a mild October morning. What ran short was fast backup. NYISO’s price for 10-minute spinning reserve, the generation held ready to respond within minutes, went from $0 at 7:00 to $486 at 7:20. NYISO logged no emergency, and this morning it confirmed those prices as final. This is the kind of event batteries are good at: under an hour, and short on fast backup, not energy. According to NYISO, New York’s entire requirement for that kind of backup is 655 megawatts, about a tenth of the state’s 6 GW storage target. In Texas, once grid batteries reached a saturation point, more than the grid’s fast-reserve requirement, reserve price spikes like this one mostly disappeared. Once the reserve need is covered, every extra battery has to justify itself by shifting energy, charging cheap (almost always from natural gas at night) and discharging later into the peak. Average battery revenue in Texas fell from about $149 per kW-year in 2023 to a projected $17 in 2025. Over the 12 months to August 2026 it was roughly $30, about an eighth of two years earlier. Battery plants may have a hard time lasting once the reserve need is met. However, that's a very different sales pitch than how batteries have been presented to New Yorkers, and the 6 GW mandate is built on a "100% renewable grid by 2040" requirement that is above and beyond even what the original climate law called for. Thanks to an eagle-eyed NYEA reader's alert, several big import links were out for planned work according to NYISO’s outage schedule. The Champlain Hudson cable and Neptune, Long Island’s cable to New Jersey, are out from October 12 through today, and the main 765 kV tie to Québec is out from October 13 to November 6. During the 7 AM hour, New York was also scheduled to send about 250 megawatts to New England, and scheduled imports from PJM to the south fell by roughly half from the hour before. New York used 379 GWh of electricity. Demand peaked at 17.5 GW at 12 PM. At that hour: gas 28%, all solar (rooftop included) 26%, nuclear 19%, hydro 15%, all imports 11%, wind 1%. Metered grid load peaked later, at 7 PM (17.3 GW), after rooftop solar faded. Over the full day: gas 40%, nuclear 21%, hydro 17%, all imports 11%, all solar (rooftop included) 8%, wind 3%. Solar’s best hour covered 27% of the state’s power; solar was done for the day by 6 PM. The day’s top hourly price was the 7 AM hour, about $213/MWh in New York City. Congestion: for ten minutes around 3:15 PM, North Country prices fell to −$817/MWh when a 230 kV line out of the Moses hydro plant on the St. Lawrence hit its limit. NYPA has a run of planned work at the Moses and Massena substations scheduled through late October. Long Island ran $20 or more above the rest of the state from 1 to 5 PM.
