Famous scholars like Matt Black admitted to Hugh Nibley that Joseph most likely had an ancient document similar to the Book of Giants but over a hundred years before it's public discovery. 4. "Worlds without number have I created" (Moses 1.33; 7.30; D&C 76.24; 29.36) exist in distinct time frames and revolutions slower or longer than our earth (Abraham 3). In Joseph's day science couldn't prove any other planets existed let alone other galaxies or multiple relativistic time frames. Einstein was a long way off, as was the Hubble telescope and wobble/transit method of planet discovery. This was a bold leap for a twenty something uneducated farmboy to put in the mouth of God Himself. Only a Giordano Bruno or Talmudic Sage come close. Athanasius’ greatest argument for the Deity of Christ against Arius was that the Logos cannot make men Gods unless He Himself is God. Pre-Nicene Christians took becoming God quite literally and fully, whereas Athanasius and Augustine though repeating the above statement were the first to water it down with caveats. I agree in principle but not to the specific claim. Scholarship is not a forum to address the truth claims of religion. Scholars give people DATA on religion. They shouldn’t tell people what their CONCLUSIONS should be about RELIGIOUS TRUTH CLAIMS. So yes, you can talk about prophecies that looked failed and discuss specific events as a scholar. But no scholars cannot tell people what to conclude from the objective data they give. That’s called Apologetics.
