Lionel Messi will be available for Inter Miami’s game against New England Revolution on Sunday night despite receiving his fifth yellow card of the MLS season, which would typically trigger a one-game suspension.
Ordinarily, five cautions would keep him out of his next game.
But for years, MLS has had a disciplinary provision that can reduce a player’s yellow-card tally if he has gone a sustained period without one.
It is a rule that usually goes unnoticed, but given Messi’s stature, it has come to light again, and it has proven particularly useful for the player and Inter Miami as the MLS regular season comes to a close.

Ronaldo thanked his fans for voting him as the best Ballon d’Or today, then decided to give us a hat-trick the same day.
This is overfeeding! 😭😭
Couldn’t have said it any better man. Lunch time at school , you was on the field practicing moves and tricks like RONALDO. That influence can NEVER be replicated
Ronaldo winning this award, especially with the fans voting, shows one thing, the fans will always pick him. He owns the streets. They spent their own money to vote for him, and there’s no greater love than that.
You can debate statistics, trophies, individual awards and everything else, but there’s something about the connection Ronaldo has with football fans that goes beyond the numbers. We don’t just admire this man, we are emotionally invested in him. We want to see him win, we want to defend him, and we want to celebrate everything he represents.
This is not a journalist sitting behind a desk deciding who deserves the recognition. These are people who have watched football for years, people who grew up watching him, people who have followed his journey from Manchester United to Real Madrid and beyond.
Football belong to the fans, its fans that knows what they’re watching and if the fans says it’s the Best Ballon D’or of all time, then it is. No greater proof than that. He’s an experience, a childhood memory, an inspiration and, for millions, the reason they fell in love with football in the first place. Football is ultimately played for the people watching it.
