The Bureau of Land Management approved blasting through 100-foot canyon walls at the entrance to the world's longest art gallery. So oil tankers can drive through it.
Nine Mile Canyon, Utah holds more than 10,000 cultural, historical and archaeological resources, including over 1,000 known rock art sites containing more than 10,000 individual images. People have used this canyon for at least 8,000 years.
The blasting happens in Gate Canyon, the entrance corridor into that gallery. Federal surveys have already found 47 historic sites along this one stretch of road alone. And it's not only the rock art. Threatened Mexican spotted owls use cliff habitat in the canyon, including areas near the proposed blasting. BLM did the minimum environmental review required and barreled ahead anyway, to move oil out of the Uinta Basin faster. Up to 1,000 vehicles a day, roughly half of them heavy tankers.
This isn't BLM's first swing at this road. Duchesne County tried the same realignment in 2015 and again in 2022. Both times, public opposition killed it. This time, BLM posted it quietly in March with no public notice, denied conservation groups' request to even weigh in, and approved it in April anyway.
It's the same playbook that just got this administration stopped at Big Bend National Park, except "stopped" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. There, a judge halted construction October 2nd, but only after bulldozers had already torn through the park’s grounds. A win in court doesn't un-crush what's already crushed.
Three groups sued over Gate Canyon this week. But a lawsuit takes months. A blasting crew takes days.

BREAKING: Trump tells an INSANE 9/11 lie at an event honoring the victims by claiming that he was lifted out of the rubble by "big strong" firemen and then hurried to safety.
This is jaw-dropping, even for him...
"I was building a big building in New York and I took the whole crew down there right after this happened and they were, they had no hesitation. Everybody went down with me," Trump said at the Steel Across America event to mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks. "We went down as a big group of people. Wasn't too much we could do, I'll be honest. It was, it was raw."
In reality, there's no evidence that Trump went down to Ground Zero on 9/11. When the planes hit the towers, he originally claimed that he was at Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan. Later in the day, he gave a deranged telephone interview during which he bragged that he now owned the tallest building in downtown Manhattan. There are photos showing that he visited on September 13th, long after the most immediate danger had passed.
But of course he didn't rush down to the site. Trump is a coward to his core and there isn't a shred of self-sacrifice or empathy in his body. He would never put himself in harm's way to help someone else. What's more, if he had gone down to the rubble on 9/11, the pathologically self-promoting Trump would have made sure to get photos of himself amidst the rubble.
"Nobody's seen anything like it ever. We had other buildings. The United States Steel Building was creaking, really creaking," Trump continued. "Now we thought it was going to fall down. The truth is it creaked a lot. It creaked, it still creaks, but, uh, it never came down."
And then came the real whopper—
"And, uh, I'll never forget two firemen. We thought it was coming down on top of us and two firemen, big, strong guys. And I'm not the smallest guy in the world," said Trump. "They grabbed me under the arm and said, 'got to get out of here.' And they literally lifted me up. This is not easy to do. I'm big. They lifted me up and they started running with me. I said, 'fellas, I can run myself,' but they were amazing."
This is the kind of lie you only tell when you know that your supporters are so brainwashed that they'll believe anything you say. It's profoundly disrespectful to not only the victims, but the first responders who bravely rushed to the site, sacrificing their long-term health and even lives. Those men and women were heroes and Trump is trying to steal their valor.
