There are hundreds of games that use Magic’s mana system “but fixed” (every big release in the last year) and they are all very boring and have the exact same problem. I find screw/flood impossible to go back to now, but I’m simultaneously convinced Magic-likes don’t work w/o it.

Anyway, my advice if you don’t like flood/screw is not to take it out of a game system that requires it to create dynamic situations—just go find a game that uses a different system. I happen to know a great one…
