"How the name of this our dwelling-place came about, nobody knows. Not less than 12 dozen ways have been found to spell it; a score of different derivations "discovered" for it; and guesses innumerable given as to its origin, but we still wait for the information required."

Yesterday's Thursday Seminar was a real treat! The magnificently charismatic Jed Wentz from the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts at Leiden University demonstrated 18th-century acting styles based on annotations and published guides to speech and movement from the time.

The Midlands contribute 25% of all licence fee revenue - close to £1 billion annually - to the BBC but received the lowest share in the UK in 9/10 years up to 2023. That share was just 2.7%. London 39.8% The North 20.6%, The South 11.9% Scotland 9% Wales 7.9%  NI 4.2%
Shocking to hear that @BBC plan to reduce investment into #Birmingham and move our beloved The Archers out of the city. I have written to the Director General demanding they reverse the decision.

I’m investing £100m in our creative industries to make the West Midlands the best and easiest place in the UK to make TV and film. I visited the set of The Cadburys and met local people doing brilliant work behind the scenes. One lived ten minutes up the road. Another was from Dudley. One told me that, for the first time in eight years, they could finish work on set and sleep in their own bed that night. That’s what I want to see more of. More opportunities for local people to build careers in an industry they love, right here in the West Midlands.

Honestly, if Brum ONLY had cybercabs in the city, it would solve a LOT of problems… No more (bad) drivers! xitter.cf/SawyerMerritt/status/2…
My 76-year-old Mom took her first ever @Tesla Cybercab ride today! She loved it. "Kudos to the designers and the engineers. I would recommend this to everybody. It was totally outstanding. Really comfortable. It feels like flying first class. It's very clean. The seats are nice. Extremely roomy. I felt like I was treated like a guest." Sharing this moment with my Mom - her first-ever ride in a fully autonomous Robotaxi with no steering wheel or pedals - was something special I’ll never forget.

Reminder in this wonderful programme that @TheCBSO was UK's 1st publicly funded orchestra: another piece of music history #madeinBirmingham. Shameful, philistine decision by @BhamCityCouncil to cut CBSO funding from April 2025 should be reversed as soon as possible by new council

Gas Street Basin, Birmingham. One of my favourite places to moor. I took this the last time I was there and every day was like waking up in Victorian England. The atmosphere of this place was beyond compare. The Grand Union Canal is on the left and one of several pubs is on the right. People who worked on the canals worked hard and got thirsty. Quite a few people have come out of these pubs and fallen into the canal over the years. Some never climbed back out. Incredibly I’ve never fallen in. Yet.
