🚨A Black Man Spent 41 Years On Death Row For Killing A White Police Chief’s Aunt. New DNA Does Not Match Him. His name is Douglas Stewart Carter. He is 71. They say prosecutors almost charged the husband until a Provo lieutenant told them to wait. Then Carter was named. That is what the defense says. In 1985 a Provo jury convicted him of murdering Eva Olesen, 57. She was the aunt of the police chief. He got death. He has always said he did not do it. On Monday a judge let him out on bail. He wears a GPS monitor. He is in a hotel. He cannot contact her family. Prosecutors dropped the death-penalty request. A new trial is set for 2027. The state has not declared him innocent. The old case was a confession he says police forced, plus two witnesses named the Tovars. Those witnesses later said police paid their bills, threatened to deport them, and told them to lie. Courts found the lead cop and the prosecutor hid that. The conviction was thrown out. New DNA from Sept. 22 does not match him on blood from a doorknob or material from the knife handle. There was no physical evidence tying him to the house at the first trial. Prosecutors still say the DNA does not automatically clear him. His lawyers also say witnesses saw a white man running from the house. They say police ignored other suspects, including Eva’s husband, Orla Olesen, who found her body. 41 YEARS. PAID WITNESSES.
