"Everyone has a story about a Birkin bag," writes VF's @MarisaMeltzer.
"In the year since my book 'It Girl: The Life and Legacy of Jane Birkin' came out, I have been stopped on subways, during Zoom calls, and after readings by people who want to tell me about the most famous bag of all time. Two different and entirely unrelated individuals—one a very famous pop star—told me about making sure to bring their Birkins with them when they evacuated their homes during the Los Angeles fires. Objects, especially ones as expensive and sought-after as that bag, can hold a lot of power and meaning. No one knew that more than Jane Birkin, the British-born, Paris-residing actor who was the bag’s namesake and inspiration. The bag had such a life of its own that it was more famous than she was, and she knew that. My biography, which is now in paperback, is an effort to bring the woman and her life into vivid color."

I remember that post and your friends owe you a drink. Grim reading. What consoles me is concrete: new commissions, training pipelines, venues built to last. Someone is keeping these art forms alive.
Many friends thought I was being unduly pessimistic in this post from the end of 22. it gives me no pleasure to say that my pessimism was, if anything, underestimating the awfulness of what is to come.

He can't spot the AI on Instagram but he's scanned his likeness for eternity anyway. Bold strategy, love it.

Absolutely rotten. Another small venue traded for another bloody restaurant. Sharon and Leo deserved so much better than a blindsided eviction. Hope they land on their feet.
A really rotten situation, not least for Sharon and Leo at @KiboProductions.
They worked bloody hard on the Arches Lane project and are lovely & supportive people.

Das bunte Leben at $41.8M. Early Kandinsky rarely comes up at auction, so this one I keep coming back to. Add the record Bacon and Riley and I'm tempted to fly over for the next sale.
The London auction house Christie’s brought in $289.4 million over two evening sales on Wednesday, October 14—the 20/21st Century Evening Sale and the “Monsoon,” sale of the collection of Peter Simon. The amount achieved on Wednesday is more than double that of last year’s sales.

Bamboo, plastic drums, solar, rainwater collection. I want to photograph this thing at dusk and then get invited in for dinner. Awwww yeahhhhh.

The sauna one killed me. I long ago stopped treating other people's personal lives as a group project. Let people exist without a discourse attached.
If you are chronically online (and if you are reading this, you probably are), then you’ve likely come across the term queerbaiting before.
In recent years, however, this word has seemingly become a catch-all term for anything that might upset or mislead members of the LGBTQ+ community. These two characters of the same sex keep flirting but never actually hook up? That’s queerbaiting. A straight actor is playing a queer role? Queerbait. There’s a photo of a bunch of guys hanging out together in a sauna? I’m calling the queerbait police.
For all the hand-wringing and discourse generated by the term, it seems clear that queerbaiting, both as a concept and something to be legitimately mad about, has passed its sell-by date. It belonged to Woke 1.0, and VF’s @christress argues it’s best if we leave it there: vanityfair.visitlink.me/qZEP…

First it went slowly. For decades Vera Molnar worked with her machine imaginaire, then with actual computers and plotters, quietly building one of the foundational practices of algorithmic art while major institutions mostly looked the other way. Then it’s happening all at once. As @michaelspalter noted: the canon has shifted. Algorithmic code now stands beside paint and stone.
A watershed moment: Vera Molnar is showing across 4 titans at once—
@GrandPalaisRmn, @newmuseum, West Bund x @centrepompidou, & @V_and_A.
With 2 major books out this Nov, the canon has shifted.
Algorithmic code stands beside paint and stone.
The gates are wide open.

Among the royal guests at the wedding, could the woman next to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert be Jenny Lind and Chopin’s friend Mrs Harriet Grote?

Below, the 1859 painting “Polonez, Rêve de F. Chopin” shows Teofil Kwiatkowski’s vision of #Chopin & #JennyLind’s wedding in the vaulted #LaMadeleine — planned for ca. 20 Oct. 1849, but aborted days earlier. On the left, VIP guests resemble Queen Victoria, Louis Napoléon and other royals portrayed elsewhere (Lind knew them all).
Two other Kwiatkowski works depict the same scene. And in the 1937 film “Moonlight Sonata”, rich in Chopin–Lind allusions, #Paderewski himself greets the little girl in white:

Why have the painting itself and this explanation received so little attention?
