ALT TEFL Worker's Union - Industrial Workers of the World Social Media Day of Action When: Wednesday 27th September Why: A worker at Brighton Language College International alleges she was sacked after complaining about being required to work unpaid on her day off. On the day, please tweet: "Shocked to hear about allegations of #WageTheft at @brightonlc. All workers should be paid for their work! It's time to pay up! #tefl @TeflUnion" Note: Please don't simply re-tweet. We want as many tweets coming from as many accounts as possible! Say no to wage theft! ALT "When me and my work colleagues only received a 2% pay rise last year, we collectively demanded a one-off cost-of-living payment to bring it up to 3%, and threatened action if we didn't get at least 5% the next year. We have now won on both counts without the need for any action." - Brighton SolFed member. One worker at a hotel in central Brighton came to us when they were owed unpaid holiday pay, tips and 3 days' worth of wages, totalling over £1,000. Management agreed to meet with us after a single picket - in the end they paid more than we had asked for as the worker had also worked an unpaid trial shift!

ALT One worker at a pub in Kemptown was unfairly dismissed for calling in sick once after nine months of working there. After we entered into the dispute, the worker received unpaid holiday pay and the then-management decided to hand in their notice rather than pay compensation. "I worked at a café where one worker was being paid less than minimum wage. When they told me this I helped to spread the word among other coworkers. The boss raised our colleague's pay to what they were legally owed after everyone kept complaining." - Brighton SolFed member Email: brighton at solfed dot org dot uk Website: brighton solfed dot org dot uk
