After our father died, my older brother took responsibility for keeping his belongings until the family decided what to do with them.
Among them was an old wristwatch Dad had worn for nearly thirty years.
It wasn’t particularly expensive, but he wore it every day, even when the strap was falling apart.
One afternoon, I went to my brother’s house and noticed the watch was missing.
“Where’s Dad’s watch?” I asked.
He continued eating. “I sold it.”
I thought I had misunderstood him.
“You sold what?”
“The watch. I needed money.”
I was furious. “You couldn’t wait until we agreed on what to do with Dad’s things?”
He put down his spoon.
“You weren’t here when he was sick. You didn’t pay for the medication. You didn’t spend nights at the hospital. But now you’re here to protect his watch?”
I had no answer to that.
During our father’s final months, my brother had handled almost everything. I lived in another city and sent money whenever I could, but I knew I hadn’t done enough.
Still, the watch belonged to our father, not just to him.
I asked how much he sold it for.
“$400.”
I told him I wanted it back.
He laughed bitterly. “With what money? You sent me $200 three months ago and thought that made you a good son.”
I left without another word.
Two days later, our younger sister called me. She had heard about the argument and wanted us to meet.

One night, I asked about him.
"He's just a friend," she said. "Please don't make it into something it isn't."

A few weeks later, she said he was hosting a housewarming party and had invited us both.
"What's his wife's name?" I asked.
She hesitated.

Before long, our friendship became something else.
One evening, she looked into my eyes and asked, “Are you sure you're not just playing with my feelings?”
Me: “Why would you think that?”
Her: “Because I'm beginning to feel something serious for you.”
I kissed her instead of answering.
That night, we crossed a line neither of us could pretend hadn't happened.
