The details here are important—the height of the barrier to accessing this body of literature means it is basically unavailable to young people. “Hi Mom, do you have a minute to sign 116 permission slips?”
One teacher's complaint means 116 books are now "Restricted" in all @ecpsfl libraries. Authors affected include: @nhannahjones @DrIbram @IamGMJohnson @ashleyhopeperez @KyleLukoff @jodipicoult @SJMaas @lxgino @ShaunieDarko @JoKnowles & @MargaretAtwood wkrg.com/northwest-florida/e…

Read banned books. Buy banned books. Share banned books. Give banned books to your friends. Talk about banned books with your neighbors. Bring banned books to the park and the grocery store. Take banned books to lunch. Let the world know you believe in the right to read.

School starts this week, so now is the time to remind our kids of the big ‘E’s as they head to the classroom.🏫Empathy. 💙 Encourage. 👏 Engage. 🤝 Equity. ⚖️ Empathize with others, Encourage others, Engage with others. Equity is not theirs to solve, but theirs to understand.

Every few weeks this poster of mine starts appearing on various reading-, book-, and teacher-themed accounts (usually with my name chopped off). Just a reminder: you can download it and the older black-and-white version at the Art page of my site for free: jarrettlerner.com

This incredible thread debunks the “no literary merit” justification for Utah book removals. Thank you for this work!
No literary merit? I can't even. First, literary merit is typically a term that applies to fiction - not all of these titles are fiction. Literary merit (def): the quality shared by all works of fiction that are considered to have aesthetic value.

A librarian was told to label offensive books. Instead she labeled the entire space. #notonourwatch #defenseofdemocracy #readout2022

In parts of Washington D.C, there's one book for 800 children. We need to #endbookdeserts now more than ever! Susan Neuman not only shares this daunting statistic during her @litequity panel, but shares solutions! I'm so motivated to make a difference!! #reading #literacy

A lot of the people I’ve spoken to say they don’t consider the bans they want to be racist or bigoted. But librarians we speak to say that the most challenged books around the country are basically all about Black or brown or L.G.B.T. characters.

Well, so much for building classroom libraries (@colbysharp and @donalynbooks) to increase literacy equity (@drmollyness). Going to be plenty to talk about at the @litequity conference. bookriot.com/florida-teacher…

Re-upping this crazy story of a book banning in ohio of author Jason Tharp @wnderfriends. The school told him he couldn't read his book 'It's Ok to be a Unicorn' after a board member complained "We are telling kids that ‘being gay is ok’?" thehill.com/opinion/educatio…
