A charter school catering to students with learning disabilities is inspiring change in New York City. @alecia__reid explains how educators are now trying to use a similar strategy in public schools. cbsn.ws/3RO2KyS

Our 2019 forum on dyslexia invited panelists @DyslexiaYale, Dr. John J Russell, @TCastanza of @BridgePrepSI & @amandamccaleb of @officialSPS to discuss dyslexia screening & rationales for early detection.
@Brian_Backstrom summed it up on @PolicyOutsider: anchor.fm/policy-outsider/ep…

ALT Screenshot from Rockefeller Institute analysis that reads, Researchers have shown that as many as one in five children have dyslexia, and we see stunning statistics that more than 85 percent of individuals in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate and analyses of prison populations show that nearly 50 percent of inmates have dyslexia. Doing the right thing here effects far more than just the reading levels of schoolchildren.
EDITORIAL | It's highly commendable that NYC’s public schools are screening all kids for dyslexia, and will pilot special programs at 80 elementary and 80 middle schools and, by next spring, will train teachers to best serve dyslexic students. @NYCSchools

Great morning @BridgePrepSI w/ NYC @DOEChancellor.
Bridge Prep E.D. @TCastanza and his team have built a public charter centered around an Orton-Gillingham literacy curriculum that is helping dyslexic and other students excel.
It should be a model we repeat.

Thrilled to see @DOEChancellor and others from DOE looking at schools like @BridgePrepSI who are actively addressing the literacy gaps in our students.
