Grass-roots groups helped the city of Cincinnati persuade ODOT to change the design of the $3.6B Brent Spence Bridge project to reclaim 10 acres of interstate for development, extending downtown westward. Now the city is planning for how to use it.

Fantastic community engagement session for the Revive 75 project. Planning for future of Queensgate, Camp Washington & around eastern side of Mill Creek. This work plus our Experience Mill Creek & $ for Downtown Plan = exciting future for our urban core w/housing & amenities.

A lot has changed in Cincinnati since 2011, and in Queensgate that change has meant vacant buildings, empty lots and stagnation. It's time to remove the constraints of 1960s thinking and allow a new direction for this area so close to downtown.
The City of Cincinnati has started the process of updating the 2011 Revive Cincinnati plan. This plan focuses on future economic development and land use surrounding the I-75 Corridor. This is extremely important for the future of our city, especially in the case of Queensgate.

Three-tier mission for what some know as the Signature Street Concept. Cincinnati City Council will consider a plan leading up to Brent Spence Bridge Project: 1. Reclaim lost land from I-75 2. Reconnect Queensgate-Downtown-West End 3. Realize investment in forgotten areas

I took a first stab at creating a list of demands for the day that will soon come when ODOT tells us that the bridge can't budge anymore. There is more to be designed on, around, and underneath this behemoth.

Questions I’m probably too chicken to ask @AftabPureval if there is a Q&A after his presentation with Peter Calthorpe @CalAnalytics Thursday morning at #CNU24: 1) When are you planning to make Bridge Forward’s Fort Washington Way II plan part of your policy? 2) Skincare routine?

Undoing this is hard. But groups like @BridgeForwardC are trying to do it. Relate the connections, update the zoning and watch what can happen.

A crossroads. Do we want the western part of our urban basin to remain cut off from the rest of the basin? Or do we want to create street connections and potential capping opportunities across? This is the fundamental question and one Cincinnati leaders must decide on in 2024.

So, if the size of highways correlates with the growth of a city and region, why is Cincinnati filled with freeways, while Tokyo, which is 22 times bigger, is not?

What’s that thing Butch Cassidy’s says? “Boy, I got vision, and the rest of the world wears bifocals.”
Replying to @BridgeForwardC
Ideas like @Chaswied thought process and vision show cincinnatians visualize something more than an area dominated by cars, they want an area for people, one that is welcoming and not a barrier. As a city cincinnati needs to speak up as one voice and demand a rightsized corridor.

One thing is certain: ODOT will not deliver a better project unless #Cinci Council asks ODOT to do so. @GovMikeDeWine has even confirmed: we won't get what we don't ask for. The later half of this GIF represents what a better project could look like. Let's do it! @BridgeForwardC

I’ve been sitting on this sketch for a long time following the latest updates from ODOT for the unnecessary Brent Spence Bridge approach. At tomorrow’s open house I plan to suggest that this project minimize its footprint and maximize its reintroduction of the street grid.

Completely agree with the former Mayors, this a one in a lifetime opportunity to reconnect the West End to downtown. The BSB project can and should be better for the city. – at Queens, NY

This design will make our Great Cincinnati greater and should be adopted into the BSB plans. – at Queens, NY
Bridge Forward is encouraged that Governor DeWine is asking for local input. We hope City Council takes this opportunity to ask for substantial improvements for Cincinnati, including additional reclaimed land and a street grid extending from downtown into Queensgate.
