me yesterday at the end of the interview: is there anything else you want to share, or anything you think is important for people to understand for the story?
the family i’m interviewing: not really, but do you want to meet and hold our birds?
Former Wauwatosa police officer Joseph Mensah who shot and killed Alvin Cole at Mayfair Mall could receive $95K through a worker's compensation settlement related to post-traumatic stress disorder. He's also seeking separate duty disability pay for ptsd. jsonline.com/story/communiti…

It's been a little over a week since McClatchy's mass layoffs. I wrote about what's at stake when communities lose local journalists.
McClatchy laid me off. The need for local journalism didn’t go with me. poynter.org/commentary/2026/…
Beyond where the sidewalk ends in a Wauwatosa park, a grassy area leads to three dirt baseball diamonds that have seen better days.
Damian Buchman wants these 18 acres of park at 10300 W. Wisconsin Ave. to become the country's most inclusive park. jsonline.com/story/communiti…

After two summers as a @journalsentinel intern, today I started as a full-time suburban reporter primarily covering West Allis, Greenfield, Greendale, Hales Corners and West Milwaukee.

Sad to share that McClatchy is eliminating my job at @thestate, where I have covered the city of Columbia for the last 5 years.
I’ll be at the paper for another 6 weeks, thanks so much to everyone who has helped teach me about this city.
McClatchy, whose titles include The Miami Herald and The Sacramento Bee, executed its most severe layoffs in years on Thursday, cutting newsroom staff at some papers by upwards of 40%.

A really sad day. This is the paper that made the nation care about Jeffrey Epstein and helped uncover the Hope Florida scandal alongside @TB_Times.
Florida needs the @MiamiHerald
The @MiamiHerald eliminated 30 positions today including excellent City of Miami beat reporter @tessriski & legend @kaufsports.
The Miami Beach beat reporter was open but won’t be filled.
Is the Miami Herald going to cover the City of Miami anymore?
Local journalism matters.

I was hesitant to write about this experience, but I kept thinking this: if the story introduces even one person to a new resource that keeps them safe or prepares them to help someone swimming in Lake Michigan, it'll be worth writing.

Some news: After 8 years covering Wisconsin higher education, I am trying something new.
My last UW story looks at a topic I hear a lot about after I tell people what I do for a living: Admission into @UWMadison and how that's changed over time.

As the below thread recalls, we had an embarrassing rollout of an AI-generated high school sports stories program a couple years ago that undermined the efforts of real journalists like myself. Standing with my colleagues against generative AI.

Today, we are joining colleagues across the @USATodayCo network, formerly Gannett, in a Lunch Out against A.I. slop. We are calling on @USATodayCo to stop forcing generative artificial intelligence on newsrooms and to invest in the people who power our journalism. 🧵⬇️

Since 2023, @USATodayCo has experimented with generative A.I., including its failed rollout of Lede AI for high school sports coverage, which drew widespread criticism for bizarrely worded stories on “close encounters of the athletic kind."

This excellent story by @heymooly seems to be catching fire across Omaha. The kind of electric shock gloves about to be issued to U.S. immigration agents are already in use by local law enforcement.

I talked to @SteveKornacki about the Wisconsin results, whether they can extrapolate to other Dem races, and what went through his head during the viral Milwaukee results debacle.
(Also, he asked, and I explained, how to pronounce Manitowoc)
