Chapter 1 of Isaiah: Summary: Current state of Judah and Jerusalem, the Lord Pleads Repentance, Predicts Destruction This is the only chapter that I don’t consider a prophecy for the last days, but in my view this is about ancient Jerusalem and what led them to crucify their Messiah. If we compare this to Jacob 5, this chapter is about the dying of the natural olive tree: Jacob 5: 4 And it came to pass that the master of the vineyard went forth, and he saw that his olive tree began to decay; and he said: I will prune it, and dig about it, and nourish it, that perhaps it may shoot forth young and tender branches, and it perish not. 5 And it came to pass that he prunedit, and digged about it, and nourished it according to his word. 6 And it came to pass that after many days it began to put forth somewhat a little, young and tender branches; but behold, the main top thereof began to perish. Why did it perish? What was going on? Current State of Judah and Jerusalem Isaiah 1: 2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. 4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. 6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. 7 Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers. 11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. 13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. Lord pleads repentance Isaiah 1: 16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; 17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. 18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: 20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. The Lord predicts destruction Isaiah 1: 24 Therefore saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies: 25 And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin: 28 And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed. What happened? Jacob 5: 9 Take thou the branches of the wild olive tree, and graft them in, in the stead thereof; and these which I have plucked off I will cast into the fire and burn them, that they may not cumber the ground of my vineyard.
The Library of Godwin 2026: GODWIN’S ILLUSTRATED ISAIAH This next year I want to push myself even harder, so I’m going to illustrate every chapter of Isaiah. I’ll also be doing some Pearl of Great Price and other Bible pieces, but the main focus is a deep dive on the world of Isaiah. I hope you’ll join me on this adventure.

I heard an audible voice that literally said only “Wait.” It was the most excruciating answer to prayer I had ever received. We were losing our house. We had been renting from a family member, and her son was coming back from a tour in the Middle East and she was going to make the house available for him to stay there. She gave us more than a month notice, and we were confident we could find another place to rent. But as we looked, we realized that the houses around were much smaller and much pre expensive. It would be a considerable sacrifice. We prayed about a house and got a stupor of thought. We looked at a few more places, and again got the answer no. The date that we needed to be out of the house was coming up, and our family of 6 was going to be a challenge to move, so we wanted to start as early as possible, and get a place secured. Finally only a few weeks before we needed to be out, I was praying in desperation. We need a place now, Lord, why do we keep getting a stupor of thought? I poured out my heart in prayer and asked desperately for an answer where we will go? The spirit flooded my heart, and I got that simple answer to wait. I was heartbroken. How can I wait? We will lose our house, we will be on the street. But the answer was firm. “Wait.” I told my wife the answer I had received, and I was scared to tell her. Sure enough she was angry. I encouraged her to seek her own confirmation. She prayed and was given comfort. The date that we were going to need to move out came and went. The landlord told us she hadn’t heard from her son and wasn’t sure what was going on. We might have to move out at any time. It was extremely stressful. Eventually something changed. We got a call from a friend in our old ward that changed our lives and miracle after miracle suddenly made it possible for us to not have to rent a place, but we were able to buy our house. It was exactly what we needed and we had money to make repairs and our mortgage ended up being about a hundred dollars cheaper than the least expensive place we had considered that was way too small. The Lord will provide when we follow His guidance and seek revelation and to take the Holy Spirit as our guide. I’ve seen it so many times in my life! I know it is true!

How was Judas Iscariot allowed into the quorum of the 12 apostles of Jesus? How could Jesus let that happen? Is it possible Jesus didn’t know? No. We know that Jesus knew that Judas walked among them. Jesus knew that Judas would betray him. And yet… That’s where I want you to ponder for a moment. Is it possible that evil among the righteous serves the purposes of God? Does the adversary sewing tares among the wheat happen beyond the foresight of almighty God? No. What purpose does it serve, then? If you can recognize that God has a purpose beyond our understanding, and allows evil to rise among the righteous, the wild branches among the natural branches of the olive tree. Jacob 5 gives us the answer if you can look at it from a different perspective, and see it as an allegory of growth, and fruit. The Lord of the vineyard allows the growth of the wild branches on the tree to preserve the roots. He doesn’t remove the wild branches at first, and only grafts in the natural branches which replace the worst of the wild branches. As long as the tree produces good fruit, the Lord of the vineyard allows the wild branches to remain among the natural branches. So don’t panic that wild branches are grafted next to natural branches, tares sewn among the wheat, goats among the sheep, foolish virgins. Worry about producing fruit. Serving, lifting, teaching, ministering, blessing. Worry about taking the Holy Spirit as your guide. Seek to become the servant who tends to the vineyard according to the directions of the Lord of the vineyard.

Does the doctrine of the priesthood distill upon your head as the dews from heaven? D&C 121: 45 Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven. What time does the dew appear? First thing in the morning. So when should you seek revelation? Also first thing in the morning.
