Following the Covid Inquiry's damning verdict on @MattHancock, we've launched a petition to remove him from the Privy Council.
His actions led to thousands of avoidable deaths.
This is a first symbolic step towards accountability.

Mothin Ali – apology and Correction
On 18 July 2024, I published a post on my X account in which I stated that Mr Mothin Ali, an elected official and Deputy Leader of the Green Party, was involved in the Harehills riots of July 2024 in which people attacked the police.
That statement was incorrect. In fact, Mr Ali was asked by the police to use his position of trust in the community to help bring about peace on the streets. Mr Ali attended the scene for that purpose alone. He was not involved in the disorder or violence in any way, and on the contrary he was one of the principal reasons of bringing an end to the disorder. I offer my sincere apologies to Mr Ali for my post, the harm I caused, and I have agreed to pay him compensation to vindicate his reputation.

Reform UK are apparently going to send out an 8 page flyer to £15 million homes. Not that I'm suggesting that you send them back, so they have to pay for the return postage. But if you are, you might find this useful.

Today in 1992, Sinéad O’Connor performed an a capella version of Bob Marley’s War on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. As she reached the final line, singing, “We have confidence in the victory of good over evil,” she held up a photograph of Pope John Paul II and tore it into pieces, looked into the camera and said "Fight the real enemy".
There was no applause, or laugh track, only silence. NBC, panicked and cut to commercial. By the next morning the phones were ringing off the hook with thousands of complaints from viewers outraged at the desecration of a sacred image. O’Connor, raised a Catholic in Dublin, had committed one of the last true acts of iconoclasm on American television.
In an interview with Time magazine shortly after, she explained “In Ireland we see our people are manifesting the highest incidence in Europe of child abuse. This is a direct result of the fact that they’re not in contact with their history as Irish people and the fact that in the schools, the priests have been beating the shit out of the children for years and sexually abusing them. This is the example that’s been set for the people of Ireland.”
It was 1992, years before the floodgates of clerical abuse scandals opened in Ireland and across the Catholic world. She acknowledged the rot before the world would face it. The cost to her career was immediate. Less than two weeks later, at a Bob Dylan tribute concert in Madison Square Garden, she was introduced by Kris Kristofferson, who described her name as “synonymous with courage and integrity.”
Yet as she walked onto the stage, the boos began. O’Connor stood, expressionless and humiliated. Kristofferson wrapped his arm around her and whispered into her ear, “Don’t let the bastards get you down.” She sang War again, her voice unbroken, and walked off the stage a pariah.
With the hindsight of decades, the scene looks different. The Pope she tore up presided over an institution that would, in time, face worldwide exposure for concealing crimes of abuse. The silence of the SNL studio that night was the silence of a world not yet ready to hear her.

I have just read #DoomPainting by A.K. Blakemore.
A book of impressive scope and aspiration. Written with a complete infatuation with words. Wit, grit and nuance. I can't put into words how consuming this masterly piece of historical fiction is.

I, Kevin Rowland (the son of Irish immigrants) and the main songwriter of ‘Come On Eileen,’ am disgusted to learn that Nigel Farage has used our song to make his entrance for his party conference. Myself, and all of Dexys are passionately against Farage’s politics.

Travelled from Cologne to Berlin today, traversing Germany from west to east and covering a surprisingly long distance within a single European country. A few decades ago, during the Cold War, you had to travel through two German states with opposing systems and world views for the same journey. Go further back in time and Cologne and Berlin would have both been in Prussia yet separated by other states in between. How confusing travelling can be when you have a mind that has a tendency to nip off into the past 🤯 Good job there's a handy landmark to confirm that I've arrived in the right place...
