Sundays watching football are also a good time to check in on current and former players. A quick text to see how life, school, or their season is going. The relationships we build through coaching should last well beyond the time they spend on our roster.

Honest question: What’s the argument, if any, for specializing in one sport before age 16 or 17? What do kids gain that outweighs the chance to compete in different environments, learn from different coaches, and find out what they actually enjoy?

Bummed to hear that USA Baseball’s NTIS program is ending after 17 years. I don’t fully understand (or know) the reasoning behind the decision - but I do appreciate the time I had while being a part of the @MidwestNTIS staff for the last 4 years.

Eventually, good coaches ask whether the work is still worth the toll. Some step away. That hurts the very kids whose parents wanted the best for them.

Coaches owe families honesty, preparation, and care. Parents have a responsibility, too: give your child room to learn, struggle, and enjoy being part of a team. Before reacting, ask: “Is what I’m about to do helping my child’s experience—or making it harder?”

Good coaches are leaving youth sports, and parents need to be willing to ask whether their own behavior is part of the reason. I’ve had the support of some incredible parents and families throughout my coaching journey. They’ve made this work more rewarding, and I don’t

take them for granted. Parents should care deeply about their kids. They should ask questions and advocate for them. But there’s a difference between supporting your child and treating every lineup decision, coaching correction, or tough day as a personal slight.
