How does someone add 7.2 MPH of Bat Speed in 4 months?
Let's dive in ⬇️
I wonder if this guy just absolutely crushed his off-season training and added a ton of bat speed 😏 @BrandonDim24
3 years ago, I started at @DrivelineBB
I didn’t even know if I wanted to be a hitting coach.
And here we are.
These are 3 of the biggest things I’ve learned in the last 3 years 🧵
2. The best hitters hit
At Driveline, we put our hitters in some of the most difficult training environments there are.
Trajekt. iPitch. Smash balls. Different training bats. Different angles. Etc.
And the best hitters we’ve ever had in our gyms show up and hit.
To quote Maxx Garrett: “We want robust swings, swings that don’t break down.”
No matter what type of constraint you put a hitter in, the best find a way to hit.
Because at the end of the day, we aren’t swing coaches. We’re hitting coaches.
Players need to know that too, because…
3. Someone can have all the best resources, but communication matters most
There are more biomechanics, motion capture, and “hitting labs” than ever before.
But the ability to effectively communicate that information to a variety of athletes is what separates things.
A compliment from a Major League hitter last offseason stuck with me:
“We’re more than just data nerds. We’re baseball people.”
That’s what separates Driveline’s coaches.
Taking the highest level and complexity of data and turning it into physical deliverables for the athlete — while also being able to communicate it to athletes of all ages.
Not using data is just as much of a disservice to an athlete as not being able to communicate it.
At the end of the day, this is about the athlete, not the coach.

As coaches we must design a practice environment that promotes self-organization.
- pitch type
- pitch angle
- bat type
- ball type
- physical constraints
- ball flight goals
This doesn't mean setting up the environment and just stop watching the hitter.
A coach still monitors the athletes' progression. Create the environment for targeted changes and steer the player in the right direction.

Offset closed gets used everywhere, but there's a reason a lot of hitters can't get it right. 🧵

Varying MOI of bats in training paired w/ other constraints can go a long way towards cleaning up pull side ball flight.
Pivot Picks ⤵️⤵️combat an inefficient load while the bats vs. a same side SL clean up path manipulations that were limiting pull side potential.

Here's the full Hittrax games leaderboard running live, which allows our hitters to get immediate feedback on how well they are executing the task in some of our hard to score games.
Here's @_lybrookV_ hitting a home run while playing MVP Baseball '04 Home Run Derby.
A staple of our training here @DrivelineBB is making challenging environments with reward systems that encourage adaptations that lead to better in-game results.
Today was the test run of my most recent project, a web app that automates the scoring of these games.

Bat speed = damage.
81.1 MPH on a 97.4 MPH fastball. Not as squared up as Ohtani's monster nuke, but more than enough.
8 of the 9 fastest swings tonight belong to the Brew Crew. Mitchell + Chourio turn fast!

🏋️ How you jump = How you set up 🏋️
In our weight room assessment, we track Countermovement Jump (CMJ) and Squat Jump (SJ).
How can knowledge of jumping ability translate to hitting?

Spoil the tough ones. Punish the mistake.
With two strikes, Snell threw Jake Bauers everything he had. Bauers spoiled pitch after pitch until he got the one he was looking for.
Pitch 11: a 97.8 mph heater over the plate.
He didn't miss it.
109.4 mph off the bat. 412 feet.💣

CLE/LAD are high airpull% but overall below-average bat speed. They maximize damage by going pullside. ↩️
MIL/TBA are high bat speed with low airpull%. They maximize damage with hard hits to all fields. ↔️
Neither is a "better" approach necessarily. If you don't have great bat speed, you have to maximize the damage on contact the best you can (air pull shots). With high bat speed, you have more choice of where you can hit the ball productively.
But hitters with low bat speed AND low airpull% don't tend to succeed (basically only Turang does, and he has a large predicted vs. actual split).
Of course minimizing strikeouts without sacrificing bat speed is valuable (like TBA).
Side note: Kurtz lol 💥
