Vince Taylor was one of David Bowie's inspirations for the character Ziggy Stardust. A classic rocker in the mode of Elvis and Gene Vincent, Taylor was born in West London but moved to California when he was seven. Returning to London in '58 he began hanging out at the 2i's coffee bar in Soho owned by a couple of wrestlers, where many early British rock and roll stars started their careers playing live and where he met the musicians who would form his band The Playboys. Taylor and His Playboys enjoyed most of their success in France, and here he is on a Scopitone recording from 1960 covering Eddie Cochran's Twenty Flight Rock. Scopitone was an early video jukebox, popular in France, which played 16mm movies of the artist to accompany the song. Do enjoy!

As I update ‘No Sleep Till Canvey Island’ for future publication I find myself enjoying a new work by Mark Wilkerson entitled... ‘Pub Rock’ @BloomsburyPub Mark’s account is a concise gathering of key events and neatly focusses on the transition from pub to punk during 1976/77.

Happy Birthday weekend to my Wild and Crazy older brother Steve Martin. There would be no Blues Brothers without the patronage of this generous, brilliant, magnificently talented master musician, comedian, author, actor and eclecticist. He invited John and I to open for him during his shows in California from which we made the multi-platinum selling Briefcase Full of Blues. Young actors today ask me for advice. Read Steve’s Born Standing Up and Troubadour. He has my blood if he needs it.

Clive Davis, the Grammy-winning music mogul who founded Arista Records, discovered and mentored Whitney Houston and specialized in resurrecting the careers of artists many considered past their peak, died Monday at his New York City home. He was 94. Davis founded Arista Records in 1974 after a storied tenure in senior posts at Columbia/CBS Records and later Bell Records. His label would specialize in revitalizing the careers of veteran artists whose commercial success seemed to have peaked. Among those were Aerosmith, Aretha Franklin, the Grateful Dead, Santana, the Kinks, Dionne Warwick and many more. The label also was home to such popular acts as Houston, Barry Manilow, Air Supply and Patti Smith. Read more on his life and legacy here: deadline.com/2026/06/clive-d…
