Well, as you've probably noticed, there's a controversial discussion going on, and since controversy isn't something I shy away from, I'd like to chip in. Specifically I would like to show example of using Ai acceleration to achieve YOUR vision while maintain absolute control over the result, hence this thread. So here's a tool I've made, which I'll talk about a bit more in the comments. #gamedev #indiedev

Can I be honest for a sec? Regarding LLMs in gaming, I feel more confused than ever. And I would like my peers and other people who are familiar in this field to chime in. It’s barely been a week since I made my post about distancing myself from a vibe coded project made by my friend in Smash. I even said “AI has no place in gaming”. After I made that post, I was reached out to by multiple colleagues in the space and people hired full time in software development. They educated me severely on the topic and I feel dumb now for my earlier sentiments. I was informed by my colleagues that it is now the norm to do 90% (and this is low estimate apparently) of all your coding with AI assistance or vibe coding. 75% of all new code at Google is made by AI and engineer approved. The vast majority of all the apps we use now are updated or maintained with AI coding - I imagine that also goes for Twitter, the very app you’re reading this on. So I figured okay - it’s here to stay in all software development - but where does that leave video games? I saw the posts from Epic Games, XBOX, and other publishers that seem to embrace the new era instead of rejecting it. In the last week I’ve been sent about a dozen different projects like this one that dissect and reintegrate Melee in multitudes of creative ways. One of them is even a build of Melee that runs natively at 120FPS and one of them simulates the feeling of a CRT almost perfectly. Some of them feel silly and useless, like low effort projects someone probably gave a single prompt and an ISO of Melee to build. Actual slop. And yet some feel like legitimately useful things that the community or people practicing could benefit from. I’m doing my best to navigate what is clearly a rapidly changing sector, especially when we regard the question of “Are Video Games Art?” And since they clearly are art, does that render AI in its development a bastardized amalgamation of what’s been “learned” from people with actual original ideas? Or is it strictly optimal to use AI in game development because games ARE software and therefore a necessary tool to wield in this day and age? I am making this post because I need more guidance on this topic and I feel open discussion on it might be the best way to do that.
Check the disc... Super Smash Bros. Melee is now an arena fighter! Fight it out on familiar stages reimagined for a 3D world. Welcome to the third dimension!

We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results. github.com/openai/math

With all the growing responsibilities of running a startup, I find myself frequently, and sadly, neglecting Pocket Rocket. This is bittersweet, but I want it to find a new home, and a worthy owner for it. Pocket Rocket is loved all around the world, but I haven't been able to support it properly for years now. It has so much potential that I'm squandering. It's been at the top of the App Store, it's been showered with praise from Apple, it's a favorite of many teams at SpaceX. If you feel up to the task of shepherding this lovely product into the future, reach out. I want to find a worthy owner.

I think everyone spends 2 hours in front of opus and then assumes that professionals are cooked. Those professionals will spend 2000 hours in front of opus and you haven't seen what they will make yet.
Ever wonder what $1874.40 of Opus 5.5 tokens looks like? Wonder no more. I highly recommend watching the whole video on 1080p on a large screen with sound on. Pay attention to all the little details. - Birds flying and diving into the ocean. - Cloth, signs and lights swaying in the wind. - Crabs scuttling along the shore and burrowing when you get close. - Fish swimming alongside the whale. - Lights illuminating the dock at night Then zoom out and see the entire island. Never dipping below 60 FPS at 1440p resolution. Yes, there's a few bugs and visual artifacts, some textures need improving, the shorelines waves sometimes look funny, but these are so trivial to fix at this point. FYI I'm on the $200 subscription plan. This used 59% of my weekly usage and took 2h 7h of API time using multiple subagents, about 8h in real-time. There was extremely little technical direction here. 99% of my prompts were "Add X and Y" or "This looks weird, make it better". It's a great time for hobbyists, bad time for professionals. This experiment has further cemented my view that technical creatives are about to experience a massive disruption.

Here's an early game trailer of Cook the Dungeon (🔊Sound on), a first-person roguelike deckbuilder where you defeat monsters, harvest their parts, and cook meals for the battles ahead. If the game interests you, please wishlist the game on Steam! It helps the game to get discovered.

A Data Center Came to A Small Town. You’ll Never Guess What Happened Next* *unless you guessed lots of jobs, lots of tax revenue, spillover benefits to local business like hotels and restaurants, discounts on electric bills, and grants for teachers.
My latest column: On a recent family trip to Aberdeen, SD, it was nearly impossible to book hotel rooms. Why? A 400MW data center in Ellendale, ND, pop 1100. Overnight, rents have doubled & the town’s pop has tripled. Welcome to the new American frontier: sfchronicle.com/opinion/arti…

You see, what fascinates me about “remember to not smile” is that he needs his pain to be witnessed. He suffers at 4am, okay, fine, many people suffer. But then, immediately, he makes a slide! He gathers the entire company! He writes an article! Is it not clear what is happening here? Suffering without an audience simply does not count. This is ideology at its purest. We see here the old Protestant trick in its Silicon Valley form: success alone is vulgar, almost pornographic. My god, you cannot simply succeed. It must first be purified through unnecessary suffering. So you get this obscene reversal where pain stops being a cost of the product, and instead becomes the product itself. The developer documentation is, how do you say, merely the byproduct, the excrement of the true production, which is the suffering. As Hegel already knew, and here I think even Lacan would agree, although perhaps not, the true obsession is always with deserving success. Here I must tell you this old joke from Soviet Union. A worker says: "we pretend to work, they pretend to pay us.” Now here it is inverted, which I claim is much worse. They are paid perfectly well, wonderfully well, and so they must pretend to suffer. Do you see the perfect madness of this? And now, the ultimate obscenity. Imagine the company succeeds while everyone leaves at 5pm. Catastrophe! Total ontological catastrophe! In this worldview, I am tempted to say, failure would almost come as a relief. Failure means you simply did not suffer enough, go back, suffer more. But success at 5pm? This cannot be explained. So when he says "remember to not smile," this is a desperate command of the superego. If you smile, we will all discover the pain was never necessary.

After South Carolina reverses its position, Continental Congress votes to declare INDEPENDENCE from Britain, adopting a legal separation from the Crown. Charles Thomson, Secretary for Continental Congress, uses hash marks to note how many colonies voted for the severance from the Crown. John Adams writes in a letter to his wife, Abigail, that “the second day of July, 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in American history.” But although newspapers report the independence, no mass celebrations break out.

I believe in only one conspiracy theory: Ohtani is a genetically modified superhuman. Future misanthropes don't believe their present is better than the past. Ohtani is sent to the past in a Ehrlich/Simon style bet to prove how far physiology has improved.

“A very small percentage of the population produces the greatest proportion of the important ideas. This is akin to an idea presented by an English mathematician, Turing, that the human brain is something like a piece of uranium.” “The human brain, if it is below the critical lap and you shoot one neutron into it, additional more would be produced by impact. It leads to an extremely explosive of the issue, increase the size of the uranium. Turing says this is something like ideas in the human brain.” “There are some people if you shoot one idea into the brain, you will get a half an idea out. There are other people who are beyond this point at which they produce two ideas for each idea sent in. Those are the people beyond the knee of the curve.” […]
