To say Andre made a mistake is not really acurate . at the time it is what he believed. it is who he was. I think we can agree it was not a mistake. So then we have to start by asking why this is something he believed. was he born this way? no that is not how any kind of prejudice works. it is put into you by your environment/parents/church/community. growing up in Klerksdorp, was he maybe taught the wrong things as a boy? High chance Is it plausible that when he was exposed to the wider world, and other ways of thinking , and other human beings , that he saw a different picture and changed what he believed? I think it is highly likely. Because I can tell you in that Bok environment they will sniff him out VERY fast. in fact , they made him captain because the other players respect him. Pause a little bit and think about the implications of that… So then are we saying it does not matter that he changed? it is too late. growth and learning and personal transformation is irelevant. The things we believe when we are young must define us until we go to the grave. Maybe you feel that way, but it does not make sense to me either. I understand the immediate outcry on this, and I think it will make sense for Andre himself to address it. as a Springbok captain he owe us that. But the great privilege of being a South African is that we can talk about these things and consider different perspectives. As a white guy I want people to try and understand just how much brainwashing we experience when we were young. What matters is who we become when we see it for what it is and we choose our own path. and all we can hope for then is a little bit of grace and understanding. Maybe it is not even a coincidence that this all happened around heritage day. The idea that someone like THAT could throw off his upbringing and gain the love and respect of a diverse team like the Springboks can be quite a beautiful story if we choose to see it that way 🇿🇦
