THE KING’S SPEECH
Rating: good
Colin Firth stars in what structurally would normally be a sports movie, except it’s speech therapy he’s getting trained in. There is admirably no single moment of a big breakthrough, just a long, slow process of improvement to an imperfect yet adequate end. That’s life!
Skillfully acted and beautifully lit with a lot of soft whites and grays. May have been in need of more musical underlining.

-Big, dangerous event happens that sets up a threat.
-Protagonist: “Gee, time for a quippy little joke!”
-Threat immediately undermined because of protagonists “Aw shucks” demeanor.
I hadn’t realized how overdone this writing is, and how much I fucking hate it, until now.

“Cocktail” starts off well but isn’t worth it by the end.
“Rain Man” is good. Cruise gives the best performance I’ve seen from him.
“Eyes Wide Shut” is okay.
“War of the Worlds” and “Interview with the Vampire” would need a rewatch before I opine.
The rest I haven’t seen.
HBO Max added several Tom Cruise movies this week! 😯
Definitely gonna take advantage of that leading up to #Digger :)
Happy Thursday! *NEW* #coffeebreak is out now. Enjoy wherever you listen.
