Previous to founding VIVA, Brendan was one of the founding members of @Bothar, he was a board director and led the Midland's supporter group. Here he is pictured with @MikeMagan1 with a heifer that was on the very first shipment in Uganda in November 1991

I’m saddened to hear about the passing of Brendan Mimnagh MVB MRCVS. Brendan graduated from @ucdvetmed in 1973 and practiced as a large animal vet in Longford for 20 years before joining @agriculture_ie. In 2001 he directed operations during the FMD Outbreak on the Cooley Peninsula where he and his colleagues successfully contained the disease and prevented its spread in Ireland. In 1999, Brendan founded VIVA, Volunteers in Irish Veterinary Assistance which funded livestock development programmes in the Developing World. May he rest in peace

Thank you to Kerry @MacranaFeirme who invited me to speak to officers at their county meeting earlier this week to explain how @Bothar enable families and communities to overcome hunger and poverty in a sustainable way. I was doing some research putting my slides together and learned that in Bóthar’s first shipment of 20 heifers to Uganda in 1991, there were 2 that came from Kerry. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people in the developing world have benefitted from the work of Bóthar. Long may it continue 👌🏻 – at Kerry, Ireland

Today is #WorldToiletDay. Almost 1 billion people in this world do not have access to a toilet and have to defacate in an open area. People are dying from diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid and other illnesses that are entirely preventable.
In countries like Malawi, access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities can mean the difference between life and death.
In 2025, @Bothar aims to further enhance the quality of life and water with our long standing partner the Small Scale Livestock Livelihood Program (SSLLP), which is hoping to extend clean water access to 800 households in northern Malawi
In the developing world, the lack of toilets and proper sanitation facilities is a grave issue that disproportionately affects women and children.
According to the World Health Organization approximately 2.3 billion people worldwide lack access to basic sanitation facilities, and around 892 million practice open defecation. This not only poses a health risk but also has a significant impact on economic development, education, and gender equality.
By supporting our project with SSLLP, we can help create a safer and healthier world for 800 families in Malawi.

November 18th is World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Violence. @Bothar has a long history with an international NGO called Daughter of Mary Immaculate (DMI) who have been supporting vulnerable groups of trafficked women and children, through various development programs. DMI is working with these groups to help them understand trafficking issues, educate, rehabilitate and finally help reintegrate them with their families and communities. In addition to counselling and rehabilitation, DMI teach farming and agricultural skills and livestock management at their care centre, Spring of Hope. These skills give the women and children the tools to help them eventually be self sufficient. Bóthar has funded a project with DMI in Tanzania which will see 50 woman farmers and 45 trafficked girls directly helped. The outcome of this will see increased agriculture and livestock training for trafficked victims along with counselling, supports and education

Yesterday our project partners OZHR Meshqerra held a meeting with the families who will receive in calf heifers from the Fr Felix Memorial Shipment. The families signed their contracts. Each recipient family also agrees to @Bothar’s “Pass-On” program, a powerful model that magnifies our impact. As part of this initiative, families agree to pass on the first female calf born from their heifer to another family in need within their community. This “pay-it-forward” approach strengthens local solidarity, extends the benefits of each gift, and creates a ripple effect that lifts up entire communities over time. With each calf passed on, a new family embarks on the path toward self-sufficiency and prosperity

Meet Hatixhe, a hardworking elderly farmer from Kosovo who has dedicated her life to caring for her land and animals. This week, thanks to the incredible donation from an Irish farmer, she has received the gift of an in calf heifer from @Bothar to help support her farming endeavors. Our project partners OZHR Meshqerra held an event in the municipality of Shtime where the farmers signed their contracts ahead of the arrival of their newest family member.
We are dedicated to helping women in agriculture around the world. We provide livestock and training to empower women like Hatixhe to become self-sufficient and contribute to their families and communities.
We are so proud of Hatixhe and inspired by her determination and resilience. Help us continue our work that is making a positive impact on the lives of women in agriculture. bothar.ie/gifts
