ALT In 2023, Somerville experienced 11 severe injury crashes but had no fatal crashes for the first time since 2018. Severe injury crashes have dropped by 54% since 2013 and data on reported crashes have trended downward since 2013 with exceptions of higher numbers of crashes in 2016 and 2019.

ALT Crashes involving a person walking or rolling have dropped 50% since 2013. In 2023, there were 20 of these types of crashes which is 9 less than the previous year. Crashes involving people biking have dropped by 26% in the past decade, but we saw a slight increase in crashes, from 45 crashes to 49 crashes, from 2022 to 2023. When we compare the number of people walking, rolling or biking, to the number of crashes, we found that, proportionally, crashes have decreased meaning more and safer trips overall.

ALT Crash data in Somerville indicate that a small number of our streets and intersections experience a disproportionately high share of our crashes. These streets and intersections are categorized as the “High Crash Network” and help us to prioritize resources. Our most recent data from 2018-2022 finds that some of our high crash locations include major intersections along state roads like McGrath Highway, Mystic Avenue, and Alewife Brook Parkway, in addition to some of our high-volume streets like Broadway and Somerville Avenue.
