ACW Somerville, battery fire in the basement

Last night, just before 10 PM @somfdlocal76 Fire Alarm Operators began receiving calls for a building fire on Lower Broadway. On arrival, companies had smoke showing, and a 2nd alarm was quickly ordered. Crews initially had the fire knocked down, but it was difficult to access and had spread into void spaces in the basement. Conditions deteriorated rapidly, and all companies were ordered out of the building and assumed a defensive posture. The fire would grow to 5 alarms over the next few hours. Companies battled the fire for nearly 8 hours before it was finally extinguished, highlighting the importance of firewalls; the fire was contained to just two of the stores on the block. boston492.smugmug.com/Emerge…

Yesterday, just before 5 PM, @somfdlocal76 firefighters at Engine 6 & Ladder 3's station heard a fire alarm going off in the area and quickly noticed smoke showing from a building across the street from the station. Companies notified Fire Alarm and jumped right into action. The fire was quickly located on the 3rd floor of the building, but the fire rapidly extended and got into the cockloft of the building, where it ran the length of the building until it hit a firewall. Access to the fire was difficult due to the multiple layers of roofing on the building, not uncommon in older buildings. 5 Alarms were eventually struck in order to bring the fire under control. boston492.smugmug.com/Emerge…

Early this morning @somfdlocal76 Fire Alarm operators began receiving calls for a fire on Park St. On arrival, companies had heavy smoke showing from a vacant house, and a 2nd alarm was struck. The initial fire in the basement was knocked down, but due to the balloon framing, the fire traveled up the walls and into the attic. A third alarm was then ordered, as companies assumed a defensive posture. The fire was extinguished within a couple of hours, and all companies made up and returned. boston492.smugmug.com/Emerge…
