Five Republicans—Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Thom Tillis (R-NC)—joined all Democrats in the vote, despite opposition from most Republicans who argued it could hinder Trump's trade negotiations. The measure highlights concerns over rising US consumer prices from the tariffs, with Brazil exporting over $40 billion in goods annually to the US, including $2 billion in coffee.
However, the resolution is unlikely to become law, as the Republican-controlled House has blocked similar efforts, and Trump is expected to veto it without a veto-proof Senate majority. Similar votes are planned this week on tariffs for Canada and other partners.
