Making a Collection for DNA Extraction – Sarawak, Borneo – Part 3
Scientists and horticulturalists travelled to Sarawak on the island of Borneo earlier this year, working with experts from the Forest Department Sarawak Herbarium to make new plant collections.
ALT The painting shows a coffee branch with 10 leaves. The leaves emerge in pairs, one on each side of the stem. Counting down from the terminal bud, the bases of the fourth and fifth leaf pairs have clusters of coffee berries. There are leaf spots on the leaves, with pale brown middles, a distinct margin and no halo. The centres of some older leaf spots have degraded, creating a ‘shot hole’ appearance. There are pale brown lesions on the berries, also with a distinct margin and no halo.
ALT The painting shows a coffee branch with 16 leaves. The leaves emerge in pairs, one on each side of the stem. Counting down from the terminal bud, the bases of the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth leaf pairs have clusters of coffee berries. Where the ninth pair would have been, there are further berries. There are leaf spots on the leaves, with pale brown middles, deep brown margins, and yellow haloes around the margins. On some leaves, the lesions have fused to form larger areas of dark brown necrotic tissue. There are lesions on the berries. These include brown (necrotic) or yellow areas, surrounded by a purple-red halo. The infected berries are prematurely ripening, shown by their progressing in colour from green, through yellow, to red.
ALT The painting shows a coffee branch, with 10 leaves emerging in pairs, one on each side of the stem. Counting down from the terminal bud, the base of the fourth leaf pair has a cluster of finishing flowers, the fifth leaf pair has seven green coffee berries, and where the sixth pair would have been, there are a further six berries. The adaxial (upper) surface is displayed for eight of the 10 leaves, while the abaxial (lower) surface is shown for the remaining two. There are yellow chlorotic patches on the adaxial (upper) leaves, and dark brown necrotic areas in the largest lesions. On the abaxial (lower) leaves, bright orange areas in the centre of the yellow lesions indicate areas of sporulating rust.
ALT The painting shows a teleutosorus (or sori) on a wheat stem. A chain of ruptured epidermal cells visible on either side of the teleutospores. Below the teleutospores, there is a mass of hyphae amongst the host cells. A vascular bundle is present to the left of the fungal lesion. It looks a bit like a smiley face, with the metaxylem forming the eyes, and the protoxylem forming the nose and smiling mouth.
