The hotel charged me for a meal I never ordered, and when I asked them to check the bill, they discovered something much stranger. I checked out of a hotel on Sunday morning after spending two nights there. Everything was fine until I got an email about an extra $86 charge. I called the reception desk. Me: “Hi, I just checked out, but I noticed an extra $86 on my bill.” Reception: “That would be your restaurant charge, sir.” Me: “Restaurant charge? I didn’t eat at the restaurant.” Reception: “Our records show that you charged a meal to your room last night.” Me: “What time?” Reception: “Around 8:40 p.m.” Me: “I was outside the hotel at that time.” Reception: “Perhaps someone ordered on your behalf?” Me: “Who would have permission to do that?” Reception: “Let me check with the restaurant.” A few minutes later, the receptionist came back on the phone. Reception: “Sir, the order was placed under your room number.” Me: “Can you tell me what was ordered?” Reception: “Two steaks, two desserts, and a bottle of sparkling water.” Me: “Two steaks? I was travelling alone.” Reception: “Oh…” Me: “Can you check who signed for the order?” Reception: “The restaurant says it was delivered to room 214.” Me: “I was staying in room 241.” There was a long silence. Reception: “Could you hold on for a moment?” I waited while they checked the restaurant records. The receptionist eventually returned. Reception: “Sir, I’m very sorry. It looks like there was a mix-up with the room numbers.” Me: “So someone in room 214 ate the food, and you charged my room?” Reception: “Yes. We’ll reverse the charge immediately.” Me: “Thank you. Could you also email me the corrected bill?” Reception: “Of course.” I thought that was the end of it. But about an hour later, I received another email from the hotel.
