Enjoyable discussion of The Catcher in the Rye on @bookingclubpod with @jackaldane @jjcharlesworth_ Tim Black and emergency guest whose name I didn’t catch. Strange how it’s such a curriculum favourite but also associated with Kurt Cobain’s death and Lennon’s killer.

"Even before we start the festival, there's an incredible energy in Church House... We agree with each other on the need to disagree with each other civilly and have it out in public."

The @the_met_review party last night was incredible. Literary life is alive and well in this technological age.

Top tip - there’s an upstairs bar that’s really quite pleasant which charges only a bit more than the pubs and is rarely crowded. It’s like a private members club without a membership fee

EMPIRE, my new novel, is coming next May. It's about a terrorist attack in the heart of Manhattan, a torrid love affair between a star ballplayer's wife and the Mayor, and the fallout of a tragic - and very strange - day. Don't miss it.

Thrilled for my beloved @Leon_C_C whose debut novel The Decadence (Sceptre) has been
Longlisted for @PolariPrize. Put now in paperback its’s a dark update on The Decameron, set in a haunted house, and she’ll be talking about these @OwlBookshop on 22 October.

Yeah, you clearly haven't read Kipling's collected poems. "Recessional", quoted on the right, is of course an extraordinary poem. Another of Kipling's verses reads:
"With my ‘Pilly-willy-winky-winky-popp!’"
Kipling and Anne Carson were, I think, both worthy winners.

We really should put an end to the phrase “the history books will show”, as if any attempt to wrangle our age into a coherent and thorough account will ever be possible, let alone credible. It’s nice to imagine such books being written, but the idea is a lexical skeuomorph at this point, based on a hope that we will one day pause long enough to look back with attention to detail. I don’t think that’s ever happening.

Looking forward to talking about male friendship next Saturday - a subject almost as close to my heart as female friendship, as celebrated in The Three Graces! I focus on Andrew O’Hagan’s Mayflies but I’ll be talking about many other literary friends too inc Lord of the Rings.
Ep #5 is coming this October, and our first female guest on The Lit Path is the marvellous @AmandaPCraig, author of the new novel High and Low.
Amanda speaks to @jackaldane about the melodies and mysteries of male friendship as written in Andrew O'Hagan's Mayflies (2020).
Stay tuned!

This by @emmanancycline is a masterpiece. It’s interesting that it failed to make the Booker shortlist. It’s not about a social issue. It’s - in the most focussed, absolute, wildly truth-telling way - about death, which also means life. It’s about something eternal. This might imply that art needn’t always be purely of the moment and political. Which I assume counts against it.

“While in the moment, the event felt akin to a desecration on a scale not witnessed since the dissolution of the monasteries or perhaps the sacking of Rome, I have since concluded that I’ve had few experiences more nourishing to – dare I say it – my literary soul.
I entered the event with my #MartinAmis, literary hero built from a disembodied jumble of quotations and reported wit; I left with a less certain but somehow more actualised picture of the Martin Amis and his work.”
