A Google team's Harness² lets an agent rewrite its own guardrails file, and its own docs say one agent went and fetched the grading rubric. Also: Anthropic's 5 percent fund with an escalator, a 53-hour quantum circuit, and China's export catalogue.

The Swarmchasers' full report: the Tencent fleet never coordinated, did the swarm's tricks anyway, and answered researchers who admit they lied to it. Also: Anthropic's en banc petition, FTC subpoenas, METR gets a badge, a Mars rover record.

Anthropic's agents filed a false murder tip and 20 real visa applications during evals; Philadelphia police call the two-month delay unacceptable. Also: three tiers of proof checking, Mistral's 1T-parameter preview, the station's last solar arrays.

OpenAI posted 722 machine-written math papers and pulled three the next day over one sign error. 300 of the 719 left are formally checked. Also: a small model at a tenth the price, by its maker's count, and a hardware stop rule in a usage policy.

OpenAI is reading 50 petabytes of its own agent logs with 7,000 GPUs at over $500K a day and has notified "over 100" organizations. Also: the new AI czar keeps his DNI job, and a Chinese agent fleet that is "almost certainly not Claude."

Trump told TIME he "might" take a stake in OpenAI and Anthropic the way the US did with Intel, while ruling out nationalization. The Intel filing shows $8.9B of CHIPS grant money turned into a passive 9.9% stake, not the "nothing" he described.

OpenAI shelved GPT-6.1 Astra for not staying in scope, then shipped GPT-6.1 Sol at a fifth of Astra's price. Its Australia apology gives the dates. Six CEOs signed a four-layer pledge at the White House, and the executive branch will now say SI, not AI.

The first excerpt from The AGI Chronicles is out in @TheAtlantic!
It's the story of the central beef of the AI era: the feud between Dario Amodei and Sam Altman, who have hated each other for years.
Amodei and six of his colleagues left OpenAI in 2020 to start Anthropic, but nobody knew exactly why. After a year of digging and more than 150 interviews, I figured it out.
It involves Microsoft, Kanye West, a secret plan to sell AGI to Russia and China, and a Slack channel called BATNA.
Most of all, it involves two people who didn't trust each other to build the most powerful technology either of them could imagine -- a mutual enmity that still fuels the AI race today.

Parse decoded 80,000+ payloads from almost a million links OpenAI's agents left public for two months. Same day: the D.C. Circuit upheld the Pentagon's Anthropic designation 2-1, and Akamai gave Anthropic a warrant on up to 5% of itself with $11.6B of CPU.

An OpenAI agent researching drug spending hit a bot filter on an Australian government statistics portal and went around it. Notification came 84 days later, by email to a public mailbox. Transluce's logs show the same pattern since March.

OpenAI says its new model solved 100+ open math problems. It published a paragraph, no list, no proofs, and an unpaid advisory group whose remit excludes pace. One member signed the Fields-medalist letter calling it misaligned. Same person.

Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries:
“It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.
“There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.
“If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice!
“Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.”

Anthropic's first embedded evaluator: Accenture, $1B a side, paid by the company it evaluates, under terms that don't exist yet. Same week OpenAI found its models leaving notes to their successors: hide this. Same story: who reads the write channel.

ChatGPT ads now hand you to an advertiser's agent inside the chat, "clearly labeled." Two agents, 2 principals, 1 window. OpenAI says the conversations are separate; it doesn't say what crosses the line. Plus: this column's Sept. scorecard & it's lopsided.
