I've had BoltAI on my Mac since the v1 days, but upgrading to v2 last week reminded me why I made the switch. Before Bolt, I was stuck with the ChatGPT desktop app (buggy, missing web features), the Claude app (locked to one provider), and alternatives like MindMac that crashed constantly. There are GitHub threads of people saying it crashes every few messages.
What sold me originally was the global shortcut. I hit one key combination and BoltAI appears over whatever I'm working on. No context switching, no tab hunting. But v2 brings even more to the table.
The instant workflows are genuinely useful. I set up custom shortcuts for specific tasks, and the inline editing means I can rewrite text or fix code right where I'm typing. Everything is customisable too, from my prompt library to plugins that extend what the AI can do. I can switch between models instantly depending on what I need, using proprietary models or any open source model with the provider of my choice.
When I'm working with sensitive client data, I flip to a local model via Ollama and keep everything on my machine. That privacy-first approach matters in some cases.
The app isn't perfect. I'd love more detailed cost tracking for API usage (they've added basic usage metrics recently, but more granularity would help). These are nits though. The developer ships regular updates, v2 is noticeably snappier with modern Apple APIs, and it respects your privacy by default.
One-time purchase, no subscription. For Mac power users who need AI properly integrated into their workflow, BoltAI v2 is the best option I've found.

I added end-to-end encryption (e2ee) for BoltAI v2 🔒
Well, sort of.
Normally, I would avoid e2ee but for BoltAI it makes sense since user uses their own API keys.
Without cloud sync, it's simple: just store the API keys locally.
With cloud sync, it's trickier.
The first step is to encrypt them using an encryption key, stored somewhere safe (Supabase Vault for example). This is mostly adequate but then I, as a developer, can still decrypt it.
To make it 100% secure, that even the developers cannot access, it has to be encrypted with user's own encryption key.
I can share it in a more technical post if you're interested.
BoltAI users, update to the latest build when you have a chance ✌️

This is my most used @Setapp apps.
- @Bolt__AI - I don't pay for chatgpt or claude, I just run on API credits (spending less than 3 dollars a month)
- In Your Face - I used to miss meetings because of being too focused on code, this prevents that.
- @CleanShot best tool for screenshots and videos
- @stayinsession Pomodoro app that let's you block everything that distracts you

I built something silly but useful ✨
Introducing: Oh One Pro
Use o1-pro, o1 and o3-mini to analyze any document.
❓ Problem
OpenAI's reasoning models are very powerful but it has limitations:
- You need to add enough context to get the most out of it and
- Model like o1-pro doesn't support document upload. You can't attach source code or PDFs
💡 Solution
Oh One Pro works around this by converting your documents to xml or images.
👨💻 How to use it?
It's incredibly simple to use.
1. Drag and drop your files into the app
2. Copy as text (xml format) or images
3. Paste into ChatGPT app
Oh and it's free, no account required.

Canceled my ChatGPT Plus subscription and switched to @Bolt__AI a few weeks ago.
This was a good decision. I don’t even come close to the monthly 20$ with the API usage.

3. Custom cache breakpoints
When using Document Analysis with Anthropic Claude, you have the option to set custom cache breakpoints.

I'm a huge fan of @Bolt__AI - it blows "Apple Intelligence" out of the water! When I pair it with @openrouter's smart model selection, it's a total game-changer and super affordable to boot!
