I rewrote my landing page today with @donaldmiller's StoryBrand framework.
Before:
"Focus music, hand-picked every workday"
After:
"Some days the work just flows. Make today one of them."
StoryBrand's rule: the customer is the hero. The brand is the guide.
So the headline is their good day, not my feature.
I show up as a guide one line later: "I'm Bobby Lyte, a DJ and software engineer."
Generally just feeling better about my consistent messaging throughout.
Built a small moment of delight for new Flow State Radio signups:
→ the headline types itself out like a terminal
→ a pixel-art cassette with their name on the label (a gift)
→ tap the gift and the tape reels start spinning
→ a note from me types itself out
I got claude to draw the cassette in code.
Adding a little delight to the most boring page in my app.
Before: "Your payment was successful!"
After: "You're in."
Plus a little joke: every time you press play, a bell rings in my studio and I DJ for you live.
I thought of this thanks to Derek Sivers.
ALT Flow State Radio's new subscribe page: "You're in. Congrats, smart move. Getting into flow state just got a lot easier." A list of what members get, then a dashed card titled "Keep this to yourself": "There's no algorithm here. Every time you press play, a little bell rings in my studio. I drop whatever I'm doing, pull out the turntables, blow the dust off a record, and start your set. My neighbors aren't jazzed."
When he ran CD Baby, he swapped the boring shipping email for a story:
...staff in sterile gloves lifting your CD onto a satin pillow, a hush as it's packed, then all of Portland waving it off on the private CD Baby jet.
Joke landed, people shared it everywhere and he got thousands of new customers.

Lesson:
No point in creating leverage with code, if the code breaks & wakes you at 5 am to fix it.

So @dhh in my experience this stat made my life net worse in America.
Living in Spain my neighbors are all very healthy. I have no concerns for personal safety - crime is very low. People take advantage preventative care as it’s affordable. Just my experience so far.
