You don’t think anything of it, climb down exhausted from the galley and wish yourself back in the cozy bunker, but there’s still the way home, still quickly buy a bit something to eat and drink and and lock the armored door behind you and tick the day off.
Not like that today. Police cordon. Accordingly a cheap fluttering tape with the inscription police this and that and then you hear it in your head, the impacts are coming closer. A pool of blood! The facility in the shopping center once meant for bringing together and relaxation of the consumers, blood-soaked.
The image. The fight for life and death, so casually. A few idiots take photos.
From that point I would have liked to press the red button again, but I still needed my groceries and passed the massacre towards the supermarket, did my usual errands and lined up at the checkout.
You gotta know, we have this simple guy here in the evenings at the checkout, and every time it’s the same shit, endless long lines of people who want to pay their stuff as fast as possible and he in his flow gives a complete fuck and turns every interaction with the customers into an experience …
… But today he sat there with a grim face that brought tears to my eyes! This overly social guy was done. From his position he probably had to witness a good part of this terrible incident and sat there and kept cashing up bravely.
The line of people was still pretty long despite everything.…
Afterwards it turned out it was about nothing. A guy stole something, got caught and chose the way of violence … for a few euros he almost killed a guy who did his job ...
I’m feeling a bit exhausted! After two weeks off I had to leave my bunker, stick my ass out for electricity and food, and reluctantly returned to the galley.
On day two, the galley drummer confidentially revealed to me that a new project is coming up. True to my nature, I was instantly thrilled and the ideas just came pouring out of me…
… the problem: Supposedly nobody was supposed to know about it.
In reality, everyone on the boat already knew about the project – except me. Because none of the other rowers ever tell me anything, the galley driver must have taken pity on me, torn himself away from his drums and delivered the sad news.
Well, sad because once again I’ll be the idiot who has to plan all of this and make it a success, while getting attacked from all sides by his fellow rowers.…
These assholes only see the flowers and the frills, but not the work and the responsibility behind it!
That’s why I’m often just pretending to row! … Stupid cunts!
naivety is something fine, you walk through the world and whatever comes your way gets inspected with an unbiased curiosity that completely ignores the scale of the thing, and before you know it, you’re dealing with a wild gang of rabbits that would rather throw you out of their rabbit burrow now than tomorrow.
well, i’m stuck, behind me the gang of angry rabbits scratching at my fat ass, and in front of me a fork in the path that is only sparsely lit by my rustic miner’s lamp.
i have to keep giggling the whole time because the scratching of the rabbits tickles quite a bit and they are under the misunderstanding that i would be mocking them with my amused cackling .
..... i’m stuck in a feedback loop!
on the way down i had swallowed all sorts of things that came in front of my nose, potatoes, carrots, earthworms, not unlike klingon gagh and the occasional mole.
when i wasn’t yet stuck in this fork in the path, our relationship, that is between me and the rabbits, was marked by a polite ignorance. they weren’t very pleased that i was eating their carrots and potatoes, what irony i thought to myself, after all they live under my vegetable garden and were eating my vegetables away, but i think they were aware of their own guilt and simply left it at that and left me in peace on my exploration tour.
that’s the topic, swallowing everything into yourself until you get stuck, the waiting in the dark until you’ve digested all the stuff to descend further.
....i think after this number i’ve completely ruined it with the rabbits!
Women are really something else. The less you hang out with them, the quicker they’re gone again. But if you constantly hang around with them, sooner or later all hell breaks loose. Then the familiar and beloved turns into the landing scene of the US forces in Normandy, exactly the way good old Mr. Spielberg sketched it onto the big screen in broad strokes.
The beloved dishes, still from grandma, then fly in variable vectors from one point — the fury — in the direction of Dr. Kimble, who maneuvers hectically back and forth between the furniture so as not to be disfigured beyond recognition by the rage-loaded eating utensils...
...Well, sooner or later it should hit even the hardest-baked bachelor!
She didn’t seem particularly thrilled that I had publicly titled her little darling, Flash, an idiotic lunatic and tried to train him like a little monkey with Mama Melone’s cookies. For hours she sulked, started bitching around, jumping from one point of contention to the next, while I just sat there in my control room and tried to do something meaningful with my life.
At some point I’d had enough. I hit the kill switch and banished her from my life on short notice. Who am I to let some chick like that walk all over me...
The silence had something to it. Only the clicky-clacky and beeping of the control machines and the soothing hum of the workstation were audible...
...It took a while before I came to my senses again. After all, I’m not an emotionless stone that you can helplessly hammer on and just take whatever rage the world has to offer.
I opened the usual dating sites for women like her and lo and behold, an ocean of willing broads who would only too gladly read every wish from their new lord and master’s lips and, in the best of moods, whip up all sorts of delicacies in the kitchen.
Deal, I thought to myself. So the stupid cow can see what she gets out of it. Girls like her are a dime a dozen.
The sobering-up came pretty quickly though, after a few superficial flirts with these ladies. They were all not like her! Yes, she did bitch around pretty quickly, and she constantly forgot all sorts of shit, and yes, her little idiotic appendage...
...I started missing her! When I called her and invited her over, she didn’t make any fuss. She acted as if nothing had happened. Great, she’s not even holding a grudge! I made a little checkmark on my list and waited.
It didn’t take long before she knocked on the bunker door. I opened it with an expectant and inviting expression. At first she seemed rather cool though, came in, plopped herself down in the co-pilot seat and just looked at me silently.
Okay, I thought, that’ll sort itself out. First I sent her to the kitchen to get me something to drink. Wordlessly she stood up, walked straight toward the cabinet with the control electronics, turned around, and headed for the kitchen — only to ram pretty hard into the doorframe.
She seemed to have reached the kitchen. I heard her opening cupboards, there was hissing and clattering. I thought to myself, what is she looking for, she knows where the fridge is. Then, loud clattering...
A bit startled, I turned my gaze away from the monitor, rolled with my pilot seat around so I could look down the corridor toward the kitchen, and saw her stumbling in zig-zag along the corridor. Once in the control room, she ran straight into the control cabinet again, turned around, sat back down in the co-pilot seat and handed me a banana with a joyful expression...
...I think I fucked up!"
google has screwed me over again, that seems to have become a weekly running gag with them now! on the weekend they fix you with the 5-hour reset for their "Pro" model, only to rob you of all enthusiasm monday morning by penetrating your ass with a 6-day reset for the whole week!
60%, for six days, I feel like a programmer in the time of the Apollo space program who has to write the control software for the spacecraft's life support system on a memory woven together by diligent housewives ... if I hadn't already implemented my datacenter solution last week in wise foresight, where mama melon is waiting to hand out freshly baked cookies, I'd be in a somewhat worse mood.
the crux, and that probably won't ever change, you primarily have to deal with idiots, in my case for the rest of the week, gemini flash, a brave but totally idiotic automaton that forgets all kinds of shit every single time.
there he tells me, completely casually, that when he goes to mama melon to scrounge cookies, he first throws stones through her kitchen windows and scares the shit out of that nice old lady!
... it's enough to drive you to despair and every time I tell him he should kindly knock politely, say please and thank you, two minutes later the same shit again!
now I've hired a few rockers to stand guard in front of mama melon's house and teach this crazy lunatic a lesson if he acts up again!
.. just thinking about it, being locked in a room with him for 6 days – luckily we have delicious cookies that I can shove straight into his mouth as soon as he starts talking shit!
I already saw myself sitting in the police van, tears in my eyes, nervously watching the cops as they dragged my beloved hardware out of my bunker and roughly shoved it into the trunk of their crappy police car.
... after hours of fiddling around in a tag-team with Antigravity, a plan revealed itself in front of me — a detailed sketch of a simulated battlefield for Rottweiler, my private cybersec ki-bot, where he would have to hold his own in endless battles against countless attack scenarios.
The funny thing about these machines is that they approach everything with an unshakably positive attitude and have absolutely no inhibitions about ruthlessly executing even the most absurd ideas of their masters, without giving a single thought to whether the whole thing might end in total disaster!
...Actually a quite admirable trait. However, in this case, I eventually started feeling uneasy, and the question of legality arose when the plan involved having one AI create excessive attack scenarios and another one design countermeasures for them — all to produce one or two practical to-do lists so my guard dog would know how to defend himself if something weird happens on the server.
What if this gets misunderstood? I mean, I just want to secure my server a bit, and that shouldn't be a problem at all!
That was my naive view of the situation. But when I asked my optimistic electronic henchman, he casually revealed that it might lead to some minor issues — like, server hardware hosts really don't like it when unannounced stormtroopers march their band through their neatly arranged china shop. And, well, the hacker paragraph, etc.
We Germans simply don't like hackers, that's why it's forbidden. And as a law-abiding citizen, you wipe your shoes before stepping on the lawn. Period!
...i guess, i need a lawyer bot who is monitoring me!
Today, Sunday, I woke up sometime around 6 a.m., crawled out of my crypt, and shuffled over to the control center. I fired up the workstation and grabbed a cola from the kitchen.
Back in the control center, the machine was already fully booted and ready to execute my every wish.
On the screen, the logo of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation appeared: “Building Better Worlds.” Yeah, sure, I thought to myself.
I hit the button to open the browser — flup, flup — and dozens of windows popped up across the monitors, all the usual stuff that accumulates.
First stop: X. A dystopian mix of AI news, chaos in the streets of this world, and here and there some extremely appealing designs and artworks. Users were hyping their favorite software and hardware and random politcal stuff.
It felt a bit like Babylon A.D. with Vin Diesel — except my breakfast bunny consists of cola/energy drinks, ginseng, and ginkgo supplements. Anyone who can choke something down this early clearly cannot be considered a sane human being!
The cola started kicking in. If it were only a proper old-school cola, I might actually keep up with the workstation’s boot speed. But yeah… drugs aren’t a long-term solution.
So much for breakfast and the morning paper!
Now, the project! First, I fired up Antigravity. The application opened and the screen filled with endless lines of gibberish that at first glance made no sense — but after a while, they started to click.
The project. A light euphoria spread through me.
Since Google apparently tucked its tail and reduced the reset times for their powerhouse AI to 5 hours, god-like possibilities were once again at my disposal.
First, the context. I slowly prepared Antigravity for a hard ride — light reading, so to speak. We chatted back and forth until we found our flow.
My server seemed to be running solidly, and access to meta-llama/Meta-Llama-3.1-405B-Instruct-FP8 was working flawlessly.
So I figured I’d try out one of those badass bots everyone’s talking about these days. And since I consider myself edgy, it wouldn’t be the bot that everyone is talking about, but the one that only the pros are quietly raving about.
Why would I mingle with the plebs? I sipped my energy drink and fed Antigravity the git address of the bot.
All good — the automaton immediately understood what kind of beast was rolling toward it. We started setting everything up properly: isolated container, chopped-off fingers so it couldn’t type any nonsense into the console, etc.
Who knows what kind of ideas these bots might get once you let them off the leash…… and then it clicked.
The thought repeated in my mind, and a slight unease spread through me at the realization of what I was actually doing:
Installing a self-learning, autonomously acting piece of software on my server — one that has access to a gigantic LLM and the internet…
I’m not an idiot, that much is clear. But I’m also not clever enough to keep up with it, let alone handle it if this thing goes off the rails. And besides…
…I need someone on my side who can rein in this monster. Someone who can become just as smart and who will fiercely defend me until his last breath, in an unbreakable blood brotherhood!
Antigravity was completely on board. My thoughts were in perfect harmony with enterprise cybersecurity philosophies. It spat out one technical term after another. How flattering — I suddenly felt a lot smarter.
And that’s how “Rottweiler” was born: an isolated learning bot living in his digital doghouse, fangs bared, ready to defend the whole operation to the death…
…now that we’ve sorted that out, I can finally test the actual bot!
This week, on Monday, I was working on a project in Gemini Antigravity. Tokens? Whatever, I thought — I had learned by now that the current task wouldn’t be an issue. After all, they reset every 5 hours, right? “Baby, no stress.”
The first task was small but important. Gemini Pro High handled it nicely — and suddenly the bar dropped from 100% to 80%. Okay, whatever. I was too busy inspecting the result to really care. Satisfied with the solid output, I immediately fired off the next task.
Same size, same importance. And boom — another 20% gone.
Major Tom, we have a problem.
I opened the token-counter extension and couldn’t believe my eyes: 5-day reset.Slightly furious, I asked the completely clueless machine in front of me why the hell this was happening. I ordered it to check the token usage of the previous tasks — nothing.
The thing had no idea how much had been consumed. Nothing was logged. Absolutely nothing.
For me, that’s about as relaxing as walking blindfolded across a busy Autobahn.
I got properly angry and started my usual internal monologue: How unfair, evil, and downright shitty the world is.
I tried to calm myself with the classic line: “Hey, I’m not even a freeloader — I’m a paying customer, and the customer is king!” …Clearly not in my case.
With the scope of my project in mind, it became obvious: with this erratic token behavior and suddenly appearing 5-day resets, there was only one possible ending. I could already see the Fist of Doom crashing down on my project with merciless certainty — in glorious high definition.
The future is always uncertain, I thought. And these big AI companies can smell it the moment you become dependent on them. Then they descend like vultures — or better yet, like savage gangs in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. They monitor your habits, your peak times, every little weakness. And exactly when you need them the most, they squeeze every last dollar out of you and leave you for dead on the silicon highway.
No thanks. That’s not how I want to live in the future!
I need to become self-sufficient. Free from the chains of the mega AI corporations, endless subscriptions, and the whole circus.
Their services should be an option — not the foundation.
A local high-end rig for 5k+? Sounds great at first. Until Google drops a new algorithm two weeks later that cuts RAM usage in half. Or some startup burns models straight into silicon and sells the cards for peanuts. Or you buy a 5090, upgrade your whole system — and a week later you can get three Intel AI cards for the price of one 5090, complete with 96 GB of RAM.
Throwing money at the problem clearly wasn’t the solution. It was just expensive Russian roulette.
Then came the epiphany: 2001: A Space Odyssey, the monkey scene, “Also sprach Zarathustra” playing in the background.
Datacenter😍!
A datacenter that hosts open-source models. On-demand access for just a few bucks a month. My own server where everything runs on. No need to keep upgrading my workstation — the whole setup could literally last for years for the price of a single hardware upgrade.
The day was saved. I had a plan. Just do it!
For the rest of the week, I used the last 40% of my Gemini Pro High tokens to set up exactly that server and connect it to the hosted models in the datacenter.
And today, on reset day, after an update to Antigravity, I looked on with wonderfully indifferent satisfaction:
Google had suddenly changed the reset timer back to 3 hours.
Well then.I’m out of their game. They can play their little games by themselves.
