Good news: my presentation put only one attendee to sleep!
Had a wonderful time at Compass Con - our client-only marketing conference.
Our experts shared their latest digital marketing, SEO and AI marketing insights with our 100+ attendees.
THANK YOU to our fantastic clients for taking the time to learn and connect with us. We appreciate you!
AND, thanks to our amazing team - this event takes a lot of planning, and they knocked it out of the park.
And thanks to Mac & Cheese, our golden, for greeting and mingling with our guests today.
19 years strong and counting!
Today, we're celebrating @BlueCompass' 19th anniversary!
It's hard to believe it's been that long. I am so incredibly thankful for the opportunity to start this journey.
I usually receive credit for Blue Compass' success. In reality, I think our digital marketing agency has succeeded in SPITE of me, not because of me. Others deserve more credit.
For instance:
THANK YOU to our amazing clients. I'm eternally grateful for the partnership and for the opportunity to work alongside your team.
THANK YOU to our incredible team. By getting out of your way and letting your expertise shine, I've been blessed and amazed by our company's growth.
THANK YOU to my family, especially my amazing wife @melliharden, for the support. When we started Blue Compass, I would work 80+ hours a week - she never once complained and has always supported me.
THANK YOU to God for this wonderful opportunity. I always try to remember that ultimately, this company is His, not mine.
As Google evolves, so do SEO strategies.
Today, Google is becoming a conversation with its AI Mode features. The best SEO tactic in this new era is to be the SOURCE. The best websites feature authentic, personal content from experts that doesn't exist elsewhere.
FUN makes our culture so much better
One thing I've discovered in my years of leading a business is that adding fun to the workplace almost always improves things.
Dale Carnegie said, "People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing," and it's absolutely true.
In this video, you can see the reaction to a surprise music video (starring two of our team members) I unveiled during a monthly team meeting.
We have a great work culture - it's not perfect, but it is made better through leadership team members who don't take themselves too seriously and aren't afraid to laugh at themselves.
Work is best when it's fun, and laughter is one of the clearest signs of a healthy office.

I'm the CEO of a rare marketing agency that never uses AI to write copy - for clients or ourselves.
Claude's announcement that watermarks are coming to its text generation illustrates one of the many reasons for our stance.
This is bad news for the MANY marketing agencies that rely on AI for copywriting and have eliminated their human copywriters.
Thankfully, we have amazingly talented copywriters who know how to write for the web at @BlueCompass.
While we do occasionally use AI tools to help generate ideas, proof, or refine wording, we never use it to actually write the copy.
WHY?
Because fully AI-written copy is inauthentic.
It's similar to a stock photo - it looks good, but users can tell it's fake. It's not original - it's a duplicate by its very nature because it's created based on the words and sentences it finds around the web.
Plus, it performs poorly on web pages. Google, ChatGPT and other platforms dislike it. It goes against Google's policy of helpful, original, high-quality, and people-first content (E-E-A-T).
Yes, AI copy is quick and easy - but real, authentic copy performs better and serves our clients' audiences better.
The best websites don’t just look good - they keep people engaged.
Smart tactics like fast load times, clear navigation, original content, and unique experiences make visitors stay longer, bounce less, and convert more.
Clicking on a link can actually be intimidating for a user, which is why extremely clear navigation, buttons and calls-to-action make websites more successful.
We're proud to unveil the newly launched Reccop Insurance website!
The refreshed site brings a bold, flat-art visual style, upgraded SEO, and several new user-friendly features that make the experience more engaging.
Thanks to our friends at Recoop for the collaboration.

We just did the first (to my knowledge) survey of Iowans' AI habits.
We uncovered fascinating insights into how Iowans are using AI, the tasks they spend the most time on, their level of trust in the technology, and much more.
For instance...
Believe it or not, nearly 70% of adult Iowans use at least one AI platform weekly, a higher rate than the national average.
ChatGPT is Iowa's favorite AI, followed by Gemini. I was actually surprised that more Iowans aren't using Claude.
Find these results, and other intriguing findings, in our new Iowa AI habits study on the @BlueCompass blog.

Google recently announced several major updates to search at its I/O conference. Here are the four most important SEO takeaways that will help your website continue to stay relevant in the new era of AI search, from our experts at @BlueCompass.
Great insights on generative engine optimization from our CEO @DrewHarden
Locals are using ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Grok to answer questions about where to find local products or services. As a business owner do you have any control over what they say or recommend? Yes. In fact, you can do a lot for free, says @drewharden, CEO and founder of @BlueCompass.

As your customers use traditional Google searches less, savvy business owners must look beyond traditional search engine practices toward generative engine optimization (GEO).
Thank you to all our amazing clients who attended our annual spring Compass Con digital marketing conference!
Our team had a wonderful time sponsoring and attending the @BreakthroughT1D Gala in Omaha this weekend!
Over $1.5 million was raised to support efforts to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Our team of web designers, developers, and marketers does incredible work 🙌
We redesigned the @DSMAirport website - and it’s a game changer ✈️
The new site is faster, cleaner, and dramatically easier to use. You can check real-time flight status, see live parking availability, explore the airport, and more.
One of my favorite parts = the showcase of the stunning new terminal opening in January 2027. It gives travelers a real sense of what’s coming. It looks incredible - I'm excited!
Huge thanks to the forward-thinking team at the @ for trusting us with this project. It’s been a fantastic partnership.
And, another great job by the expert marketers, designers and developers at @BlueCompass!

The @BlueCompass team split into groups for volunteer opportunities this quarter.
I visited one of my favorite places: Meals From the Heartland.
@MftH rallies volunteers and donors to pack nutritious meals that fight hunger for kids and families, both right here in our communities and around the world.
It's super easy to jump in, pack meals together, and actually help save lives one meal at a time.
Also..... man, do I look good in a hairnet.
