One of the least talked-about chapters of WWII history: cooperation between parts of the Zionist movement and Nazi Germany. In 1933, Zionist representatives and Nazi Germany established the Haavara Agreement. It facilitated Jewish emigration to Palestine and transferred capital through German exports, reaching around 140 million Reichsmarks. In the late 1930s, Zionist representatives negotiated directly with the Gestapo over Jewish emigration to Palestine. Moshe Bar-Gilad met Adolf Eichmann in Vienna to discuss training facilities and transportation. During the war, some Zionists also held positions in German-controlled Jewish councils and police forces in the ghettos. The book documents cases in Vilna and Bialystok, while also documenting Zionists who joined armed resistance against the Nazis. Then came the Kastner affair. In 1944, Rudolf Kastner's Rescue Committee negotiated directly with Eichmann and other SS officials while hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews were being deported. Those negotiations later became the subject of one of Israel's most explosive political trials. Haavara, negotiations with the Gestapo and Eichmann, cooperation by particular ghetto officials, armed resistance by others, and the Kastner negotiations are all part of the historical record. That's the history this Soviet documentary was talking about.
